I never understood the protest that he wasn't a 7. He was ALWAYS a 7.

I also never understood why Kevvie and Alf were so shithouse at coaching halves, given their collective pedigree.

He had a lot of good #7 traits .
But if he can`t kick 50 metres he`s not a #7 IMO . Last night was a coming of age .
One kick he put deep into the right corner late in the game was masterful .

He is a lot faster runner than you might think too . Remember him running down Selwyn and bundling him into touch ? The cover gave up once he was in the clear last night . And that tackle on To`o will be on highlight reels for years to come .
Congrats Thomas .

Won't be a total coming of age until the obligatory 'Broncos the one that got away' news article.

If we'd kept Dearden, I wonder how a Mam at 6, Dearden at 7 halves pairing would have looked.

They have a lot of similarities in their game. In the past few years I would have said both are clearly playing like a pivot, they're too similar and it wouldn't work with a controlling, play-kicking first receiver, but Dearden is developing really nicely.

I'm guessing its a halves combo we'll see at origin level sooner rather than later.

You'd think Ezra mam is next in line now unless Sam Walker comes back with really good form.

You'd think so, but knowing Billy I wouldn't put it past him to put Walsh at 6 if Munster weren't available

The performance of Dearden puts less pressure on the next 6 that comes in.

He carried the team last night... and he was a focal point for attack in game 2... on top of when he came in for his debut which was a decider at the last minute.

With Dearden showing his kicking game last night, and Ezra improving his kicking (based on the dogs game) I think a combo of 6. Ezra 7. Dearden really compliments each other.

Ezra has been great this year when Reynolds just gives him early ball... Dearden is improving as a first receiver at an insane rate... so Dearden can just be the number 1 man, but if they want to run a play to the left then Ezra is doing really well at organising his edge and icing moments.

Walker loves getting his hands on the ball and throwing a thousand shots... that could lead to overshadowing Dearden, which he can probably handle, but Dearden is showing that he can be the man in this qld team so Walker could be too many cooks in the kitchen

Even in the dogs game Ezra showed a lot of leadership to basically put the team on his back and get us the win, because Reynolds and Cobbo were terrible.

You could see some evidence of that last year when Reynolds was out as well.

He was really frustrated when he couldn't get the ball, but I dont think he had the skills to put the team on his back last year... he's really levelled up this year and hopefully he continues on this current trajectory he's got

He arrived at the Broncos (first grade) as a decorated junior 7.

Agree with everything you say, my concern was a little more role-based. Ezra's greatest strength is support play and showing up all over the field and chasing everything to be right place, right time and create opportunities out of nothing... That's also probably the defining hallmark of Dearden's game.

If Mam and Dearden partnered in the halves, and Dearden was playing hands-on first receiver and calling the shots, he'd probably need to be a little more passive with his game - he couldn't be chasing everything like a little bull terrier on 4th tackle if he knew he had to be in place for the 5th tackle kick, he can't be drifting all over the field if he needs to be lurking next to the ruck to setup 1-wide to run an attacking play on the next quick PTB.

Munster was the 6 last night but he's very experienced, took on a lot of the kicking and organisation and was the unquestioned senior, controlling half. With Mam and Dearden it would look a little different and they'd probably need to find some balance to complement each other in service of shaping, controlling and executing the gameplan. Not saying it couldn't work, I'm sure it could, but it would require some adjustment in my opinion.

There's probably arguments for pairing a running half like Dearden / Mam with a more traditional 7 (maybe Walker) to allow the 6 to be free to roam everywhere while the 7 plays conductor. Might overshadow like you say, but might actually free Dearden up to play to his strengths.

1. Walsh
6. Dearden
7. Walker
9. Grant (One day hopefully Mozer if all goes well)

14. Mam

Could be a NSW nightmare.

Definitely agree that at the end of the day, both Mam and Dearden started their first grade careers really exclusively as secondary halves who played as true 6's, but both are maturing and finding their feet as more controlling halves who could be the shot-calling first receiver, or the complementary running pivot.

But ,,,, was a pop gun kicker .
That`s why The Chad and now Clifford have been brought in to play right side and do the majority of the kicking .
Like I said he has obviously worked on distance and hang time on his kicks .
Even Alf was able to improve the distance of his kick . I wonder who coached Tommy with kicking ? Milf studied with the Lions back in the day .

Dearden is named at #7 and Clifford #6 for this weekend ....

Jersey on the back doesnt mean anything... that's just Todd because he said a few weeks back that Dearden will be our halfback moving forward.

But he stayed on the left and Purdue lasted about 2 games in the 6 jersey before Todd panicked and brought Cliffdog back... now he just names Clifford in the 6

From the photos and videos from last night's game Kerr seemed to be around Walsh, Shiba and Carrigan a far bit.
Maybe getting friendly with his new club teammates
I felt this way too and noticed early in the camp that Kerr was with our boys in lots of instagram. Enough to be noticeable at least. I wonder if Kerr's chats with @Super Freak when walking their dogs might change!?
