Ah well, looks like we have to get rid of the salary cap to stop this new comp stealing talent!
Getting rid of a salary cap may or may not work for us.

We're publicly listed, which I think means they have a responsibility to spend the money appropriately.

On the other hand any privately owned clubs can just spend themselves into bankruptcy... Sydney clubs backed by massive leagues clubs are potentially able to spend however they want as well.

Is Rugby still a thing?
In the northern hemisphere it is.

It's only getting traction here, because I'm pretty sure player managers are getting kick backs if they can bring their clients to the competition.

I believe any of these deals they're talking about at the moment aren't actually deals, and they're more like letters of intent or something like that.

For R360 to get their next round of investment money they need to show they can get enough players interested in joining the comp... so it sounds like Roger and guys like that have basically just signed a letter saying "yeah I'd join if you're going to give me $1m for 8 weeks" or whatever.

So they aren't binding contracts and the comp is like several years away... but their primary market is the European Rugby market where people give a shit about the sport... so the big contracts would be going to UK union players, etc.

It seems like NRL players are just fleshing out the numbers to get their next round of investments

**** me I just looked into that comp. He’d be mad not to take that money and play all around the world…

The thing with this middle east money is it will be tax free. That makes a huge difference if you can stick it out over there. They can afford to pay obscene amounts of money to players as well, it makes it very attractive.

In football, look at somebody like Josh Brownhill. In rubgy league terms, he's nothing more than a solid, Queensland cup player, yet he's signing a deal to play in Saudi to net himself $200k a week over 2 years. Thats 20 million ish tax free.

Except for the fact that Payne is husband, father, Dad to his younger brothers, and has so many responsibilities that would need him to have a really stable environment for all those he looks after? He obviously wants them all to thrive. Sometimes money just can't bring happiness. If he was a single man with no deep responsibilities, he'd probably go for it after he wins a premiership with us.

5x the money assists in all of that.

It’s not a bad point but there is certainly a limit to what you say no to. It’s 4 months a year of work as well rather than an extended NRL season.

Payne is a freak as well, this would be a chance to become a global sports superstar rather than just a local one. The potential long term benefits would make up for the short term sacrifices.

Oh, I didn't know that it's only 4 mths?

Idk .. if it was me, and in Payne's position, I would not want to take my eyes off my boys. Don't want them leaning towards the ways of mum and dad.

It’s two two month blocks… and playing all around the world. It’s Saudi money but not like they’re playing there.

Hard to say no to imo, but I don’t think the comp is even officially a thing yet so we may be jumping at shadows

The only answer there would be if Payne wanted to get a tutor or something to travel around with them .. and his family is keen.

What months is it proposed they play, do you know?

I couldn't get mad at Payne for taking that deal. He's earned it, and I'm certain he'd become an international superstar in that arena.

I might even watch the odd game if he's playing.

I don't think he will, though.

Yes, this is the clincher. But also the reason he should make as money as he can, while he can.

Could he have a future in media? Maybe, but competition is fierce and being big and fit isn't the pre-req.

Payne may have met with them, but league can't do anything about that phone hook ups and urgent CEO meetings achieve nothing because you can't compete financially with them so there is nothing you can do.

It's like Rugby in early 00's you just have to say Wendell if you want to triple your pay go mate and back yourself to have a new Wendell.
Good luck to anyone who goes. People are entitled to maximise their income The money will be good but the trade of will be legacy and career achievements. In saying that I hope those who stay are prioritised for end of year contracts and after career jobs.

My brother in law was CEO of Triathlon Australia at one stage(former athlete) and that involved plenty of work around the world. Money was great but my sister knows how distruptive it can be on the family when your partner isn't around for even short periods, not everything is about the money

Still I'm not saying he shouldn't take it, I certainly wouldn't stand in his way.

Play R360 for 4 months a year and then play NRL with broncos at a discount, because you're not here for a third of the year.
Talk of life bans for players that go to R360 so that might not be possible. I wouldn't be surprised if this goes ahead, we got two expansion clubs on the horizon and to lose a stack of quality players would drain the quality pool even more then it will before taking R360 into account.
