Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

The player can still backflip though... so if dogs came in and said we'll give him more money Payne could flip on souths to dogs

That's what I don't think can happen. I think the "cooling off period" only allows the incumbent to offer a counter-offer. So the player can either accept the counter-offer, or honour the (in this case, Souths') first contract. It doesn't allow a 3rd party to sneak in, and doesn't allow them to just cancel the first contract and become a free agent again.

I think.

PS. I really should look up the rules before I go spouting shit. Let me have a look...

For a player to take the new deal they first have to backflip, so ultimately it's still in the player's hands... but we don't really know if the player effectively has 10 days where at the end they will be bound to one of the two clubs.

Does he have 10 days and at the end is like I'm not signing either anymore.

Backflipping doesn't happen too often and we only know about the ones in the media.

Were there ones like Teddy who signed with raiders or something, but ended up at rorters or Junior Paulo flipped around in someway as well. I think both had raiders involved, but I can't recall the details as they were years ago at this point.

I can't find the rules on the NRL site, but it does look like what I said. They technically don't backflip on the new deal, as the NRL don't sign off on it until after the 10 days (so it's not a done deal). It just allows the incumbent club to be aware of the new deal and table their own offer. It's only the incumbent that can offer a new offer, no other club can jump in:

"
Brandon Smith’s switch from Melbourne to the Sydney Roosters proved to be the catalyst for the cooling-off period to be implemented in the NRL in its current guise.

"What we've done is, to give clubs a chance to work through it," RLPA chief Clint Newton told SEN 1170 The Run Home.

"One of the issues we had… Brandon Smith, where the club was not notified when he signed with the Roosters."

Smith left the Storm after playing six seasons at the club, where he became an NRL regular, won a premiership, was crowned Dally M Hooker of the Year and became a New Zealand international.

However, the Victorians were unaware he had received a legitimate offer from the Roosters, so weren't afforded an opportunity to persuade him to stay as they found out of his departure when the deal was announced by the Chooks.

"What we wanted was to assist with the incumbent club at least being notified that there is a genuine offer on the table," Newton continued.

"It won't obviously be signed off by the NRL until that incumbent has had a chance to put another formal offer forward.

"So, what we wanted to do is obviously give some further protection for the incumbent club, the ones that have invested in the player."

It's only the two options, Payne can either wait out the 10 days, and the Souths contract will be lodged then accepted or he can accept an offer from the Broncos.

Titans can't ring up with 1.5 million and him take that.

More from another article, technically not a "cooling off period". From 2023 so I'd say it's the current rules:

" The NRL is set to introduce a new rule to give clubs a 10 day window to convince players to backflip when they sign contracts with rival clubs.

The changes to the salary cap and NRL contract laws were sent to clubs during the week according to The Daily Telegraph and will be introduced on November 1.

Under the new structure, offers for players must be lodged with the NRL and if accepted their current club has a chance to change the player’s mind.

The changes could see big-name stars such as Jarome Luai and Joey Manu potentially backflip on any prospective contracts tabled and accepted.

Previously the NRL had a ‘cooling off period’ but an NRL spokesperson explained the ”last right of negotiation” rules aren’t the same.

The document provided to clubs reportedly states: “every player must provide his incumbent club with a last right of negotiation for a 10-day period from the date of notice that the player has received an offer from a rival club, and that offer has been submitted to the NRL, that he is prepared to accept” according to the SMH.

“The new process does not involve a ‘cooling off period’,” the spokesman said to News Corp.

“The new negotiation window is for a period of 10 days after a player receives an offer they would be willing to accept from a new club."

Tedesco used the Round 13 rule same as DCE. Decided before Round 13 that he wanted to stay at the Tigers.

Teddy only took 8 days to flip though to stay at the Tigers! DCE signed March 6 and flipped June 3 just before round 13.

Flegler/Barnett (big and psycho) and mcinness/stone (or another hard trainer, tackles everything in his path) with a gun 2nd row who can play middle (eg wong).

I know this sounds crazy to think we could get all that but we are going to have a SHITLOAD of cash to splash. I legitimately think we are going to get better, the squad will be far more balanced. Its the experienced half in reynolds and maybe hunt we will miss more I think but we aren't going to get much more ready made than pezet.

Can't wait for the media and butt hurt fans to cry about the salary cap when we sign these players despite losing a few million dollars worth.

I’d love Fleg back, but isn’t another knock to his shoulder a career over moment? The phins are also paying him close to a mil

Edit: Barnett is like 32 and coming off an acl as well
