Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

Poates - one year extension
Maybe we are backing Coates and Verhoeven to fill Shibasaki and Anderson holes next year?

Herbie's obviously an elite centre, but I'd almost be against taking that spot from Mariner. The glimpses we have seen of Deine in the centres he looks super promising. Not sure we can carry Staggs and then Herbie on big coin.

Broncos will start restocking the outside back shelf soon.

Poates - one year extension

I am shocked.

I think this is a good outcome for Coates and Broncos, gives another 12 months to find out where he's at and 30 Cup games and finals.

He still has a lot to learn and improve, and Burt is pretty good at that for outside backs. Delouise would have been great for him this year.

It's good that he can talk to other clubs after this week, but he's signed on straight away and he's happy to wait and just go another year. Not making stupid four-year deal demands.

He will be a target for the Chiefs eventually you'd think.

fair point, happy with mariner's trajectory too, whoever managed to inject a bit of mongrel into him did a good job

Were you thinking he was more likely to leave than sign on? Maybe he and his bro plan to go to the Chiefs?

Right. I thought he meant other players were coming to the club. Is it replenishing if the player is already here?
Maybe not replenishing, but maybe restocking.

It's like we're back in Year 10 English, trying to decipher Shakespeare. 😄

Haha fair. I just thought if you a player or two (if we assume Gibasaki is also leaving), you'd be replacing them with others.

I'd advise not putting anything or anyone in the way of Mariners development. I feel we have just scratched the surface of him as a centre.

Definitely able to reach Herbies level for mine...

Depends how Verhoeven comes along in the next few years he's definitely got potential.

True, but Staggs is 28 this year... Verhoeven is 19 and Mariner's preferred side is right side.

Verhoeven still has a path to left centre, but it might happen around 22 or so.

Mariner has a path to centre and eventually right centre

Badel reporting that Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars are locked in a contract shootout to save their careers at the Broncos due to salary cap pressures.

if true and if it was my decision, I'd be taking Arthars every day of the week. he'll also cost less than Shibasaki who is asking North of 500k a year.

Asked if the Broncos can afford to keep Shibasaki, his agent Wayde Rushton said:

“To be honest, I’m not sure.

“I know the Broncos would like to keep everyone they’ve got there, I just don’t know how that will work with the blokes they’ve still got off-contract.

“We’ve got other clubs that are interested.

“Gehamat wants to stay, but he is getting back to the form he was in last year and if he does that, that will warrant him getting signed.

“We would love it resolved sooner rather than later for Gem, but he would like to secure a Broncos deal moving forward.”

The Broncos have yet to table a deal for Shibasaki or Arthars, but coach Michael Maguire insists he is doing everything possible to keep the pair.

“I don’t want to lose ‘Gem’ or Jesse,” Maguire said.

“Jesse has been outstanding. Everyone wants to be out on the field but what Jesse does for the team, he is part of a leadership group and he drives values.

“With Gem (who is back at centre after being dropped in round 3) sometimes you have to take a step backward to go forward.

“It’s hard for Gem because he was brilliant last year and every now and then you get challenged in how you perform.

“In true Gem style, he just went back to his training and works hard and was patiently waiting on the bench.

“Gem has been excellent in his attitude through this period and hopefully we can keep him here.”

Josh Hannay has ruled out chasing Shibasaki
“Gehamat was offered to us and we spoke about him internally,” Hannay said.

“But at this stage we are happy with our centre options.”
