If it's a 50% increase to the cap (it won't be that high) then a rachet like that can make salary cap management near impossible.

You could sign Willison to $800k and then the rachet pushes it up to $1.2m!!

You could put a limit on the rachet, but why would a manager want to put a limit when it could explode

possibly ... but how many ratchet clauses could a club put in before it makes a mess of a clubs salary cap.

using us as an example, we have 12 players off contract for the 2028 season. many of these will attract plenty on interest, meaning if we go down the ratchet clause route, we could have 5 or 6 in place waiting for the 2028 cap announcement

these players will all want to get a taste of a significantly increased salary cap ... Josiah Karapani, Deine Mariner, Blake Mozer, Brendan Piakura, Xavier Willison and possibly Philip Coates ( a rookie but will likely be in high demand)
 
Hmmm if Wilison is taking up 7% of the cap then this doesn't change with a cap increase.
 
Anyone else keen on signing Taulagi?
Mariner can shift to centre and gives us extra depth in the backs given we are losing Arthars, Anderson, Shiba (likely) plus Karapani is one offence away from having his contract torn up.
Also clear our kids are nowhere near ready.
Really should be going all in on him. Brisbane kid and has star power and that is whom our club should always be linked with.

I wouldnt be so sure. In your scenario cap has gone up to 18m roughly. 30 into 18M is 600k each. You pay 5 guys 1.2m then the remaining 12M is 480k each. You pay 10 guys 1M each the remaining 20 get 400k each.

Each player is worth percentage of your cap space. 30 people share 100% of the cap. No matter what the cap is. 12M or 150M 30 people share it. Its up to the club to work out how valuable each player is to the team.

May as well have paid Haas $1.5m if the new cap means nothing
