Electric fullback and playmaker Reece Walsh is coming home to the Brisbane Broncos. The 19-year-old has signed a three-year contract that will see him return to the Broncos for the 2023 season until at least the end of 2025. Queenslander Walsh is one of the NRL's most exciting emerging talents, having been on the cusp of making his Maroons State Of Origin debut last year before injury robbed him of the chance.

His continued strong form also saw him called up for this year's extended Queensland squad - Walsh's NRL career now standing at 30 games since making his debut in Round 7 last season. In those 30 appearances, he has racked up 10 tries, 19 try assists and 21 line breaks while averaging 129 running metres and 125 kicking metres per game. He's also slotted 58 goals at 76 per cent accuracy.

Walsh's commitment to the Broncos represents a homecoming with the backline gun having first joined the Broncos Academy as a 13-year-old and then signed his first contract with the club two years later before going on to round out his high school years by representing the Australian Schoolboys. In 2019, he won selection in the Queensland Under 18s and also spent the season training with the Broncos NRL squad - before announcing himself with a standout performance in his first game of senior footy for the Broncos in their opening trial of the 2020 season against Wynnum.

Walsh now joins a host of other young products of the Broncos’ elite pathways to commit long-term to the club including Selwyn Cobbo, Ezra Mam, TC Robati, Cory Paix, Kobe Hetherington, Jordan Riki, Xavier Willison, Deine Mariner and Blake Mozer. Broncos Coach Kevin Walters said: "Reece's return is great news for everyone at the Broncos and for all our supporters and members - we'll get him back home next year.

"He's a terrific young footballer and someone who has always belonged in Brisbane so it's fantastic that he is coming back to where he belongs.

"Reece came through the Broncos system from a young age and the club has always considered him to be one of our most promising talents. "He returns to us with some great NRL experience under his belt and rejoins the club at a time when we are forging something special. "A number of other emerging players who've come through the Broncos system have also committed long-term to the club in recent times and it's great that Reece has chosen to do the same."

Playmaker Madden Joins Broncos

Talented playmaker Jock Madden has committed to the Brisbane Broncos until the end of 2024.

The 22-year-old who played 14 NRL games in 2022 has signed a two-year contract with the Broncos and will provide excellent depth in the halves heading into to the 2023 season.

Madden, a five-eighth and halfback, captained the 2018 Australian Schoolboys team before linking with the Wests Tigers the following year and making a winning NRL debut in 2021 Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium.

He tasted more success at Suncorp Stadium this year when playing a breakout role as the Tigers upset the home team in Round 20, starting at halfback and scoring a try, creating two line breaks and having a hand in multiple tries with his passing, step and deft kicking game.

Broncos Coach Kev Walters said: “Jock is a great signing for our NRL squad, he is a talented young player who has some NRL experience and knows what it takes to train and play at the top level.

“He’s a good developing half with plenty of skill and vision in his passing, running and kicking games and gives us some really nice depth in the halves, and we saw some of that on display at Suncorp earlier this season. “We are looking forward to Jock joining us for preseason in November as we build into a big 2023.”

Hoeter Extends With Broncos Until 2024

1663920916621

Robust outside back Delouise Hoeter has sealed a two-year contract extension with the Brisbane Broncos to the end of the 2024 season.

The hard-running 28-year-old was one of the good news stories of 2022 as he ended a 2475-day absence from the NRL to make his first grade comeback and go on to play seven strong games for the Broncos across the season.

Hoeter, who made his NRL debut for the West Tigers in 2015, disappeared from the top level until a standout 2021 for Broncos Affiliate Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Hostplus Cup saw him join the Broncos on a train & replacement contract at the start of the season before being upgraded to a Top 30 NRL contract.

The trainee teacher was then called-up for the Broncos’ Round 6 clash with the Panthers in Penrith, going on to score four tries in seven NRL games across 2022 as well as running for 118 metres per game and making 14 tackle busts and seven line breaks.

Broncos Coach Kevin Walters said, “Delouise is a great example of what having a never-give-up attitude can produce. He has done really well this year whenever he was called upon to step up and do a job for us.
His attitude around the club is outstanding and he is exactly the kind of player and person that we want at the Broncos. Kevin Walters Head Coach

"It’s great news for the club that he will be with us for another two seasons.”

Paix re-signs to continue Broncos journey
Source: Broncos.com.au

Emerging Broncos hooker Cory Paix has committed to the club until the end of the 2025 NRL season.

The two-year contract extension continues a journey that started when he joined the Broncos Academy as a 13-year-old. “I love the boys here, the coaching staff and the office staff, it’s such a cool place to be,” Paix told Broncos.com.au. “This club has had so many great players, and that’s where I wanted to get to and that’s where I wanted to position myself.

“I signed my first contract when I was 15, they’ve been so welcoming and looked after me from day dot. “As a youngster, the Broncos stood out to me, hearing how good the system was here, and how much you can learn and develop as a footy player and as a person as well, it was a no-brainer for me.”

Paix started playing footy as a six-year-old in Toowoomba for Southern Suburb Tigers, by 12 he was picked in his first Queensland side.

“I remember quite clearly, it started when I was at a national carnival,” Paix said. “It blew my mind that I got picked for an under 12s Queensland side. Ever since then, I really wanted to work hard and realised playing footy could be an option for me. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the years to get where I am and am still putting in a lot of hard work. “That’s the time in my life that showed me I wanted to pursue this as a career.”

230123-training-037.jpg

Paix has played 29 NRL games since making his Broncos debut in 2020, possessing a lethal running game with his sharp acceleration out of dummy half as well as a great pass.

Last season, Paix was a lucky charm of sorts with the Broncos winning 75 per cent of the 12 games he played including nine straight between Rounds 7 and 19, with only a knee injury preventing him playing more in the top grade. But he is the first to admit that the transition from a junior halfback star to the hooker role was not an easy one.

“I played halfback right up until the end of 2019,” he said. “My first year I played halfback in the Queensland Cup and I learnt a lot playing against men, it was an eye-opener, but I thought I did really well that year. “I was a bit hesitant about the transition to hooker at first, because I’d never played that position before, but if that’s what the coach wants you to do, you just do it. “I fell in love with the position, it has taken me until now to be really familiar with my own game at 9, learn how to play it, it’s a different beast.

“I think it really suits my personality. “When you are in the middle, you are a worker, that’s what I’m like away from footy too, I’m always looking for work to do. With the speed of the game now, I feel I can use my speed around the ruck and defensive wise I really love ripping in.”

Broncos Coach Kevin Walters said, “Cory is a key part of our squad and his commitment to stay is fantastic news as we continue to build something special here at the Broncos. “He has been with us for a decade since joining our elite development pathways as a youngster and his work ethic and commitment are outstanding. “We have seen him grow into his role as a hooker and we are all really excited to see him continue to develop in that role in the years ahead.”

230110-preseason-training18.jpg

Paix is one of a massive 20 home-grown players across the Broncos squad for 2023 who have been identified and developed over many years through the Broncos Academy system. And he’s made no secret of his desire to improve and claim the No.9 jersey as his own. “I made it public that I want to be the starting 9 here and play behind this great forward pack, Paix said.

“I definitely think we can do something special in the years to come, certainly with the players that are around here, the coaching staff. It’s a good place to be. “It’s scary, the forward pack is still quite young, so if we can stay together, we can be a definite force in the competition, it’s amazing what they’ve done at a young age. “I want to be where they are and take my game to another level.”

While he works hard on his game on the field, he works just as hard off it. Paix is in his final year as a carpenter with ReeBuild in Brisbane. “It’s a getaway factor for me during the season,” he said.
“While the boys have their feet up, I’m out on the tools, which I enjoy. It gets me away from footy and gives me a back-up after footy. It’s vital in my journey.”

Corey Jensen re-signs to 2025

Workaholic middle forward Corey Jensen has extended his commitment to the Broncos for another two years. The 29-year-old Queenslander with 76 NRL appearances was a welcome addition to the Broncos last year after joining from the Cowboys system, with his new deal taking him to the end of the 2025 season at the Broncos.

Jensen came to Brisbane last year to prove he belongs in the NRL. The hard working prop unassumingly went about his business in Brisbane’s engine room and quickly became a favourite amongst teammates for his tireless work ethic. “First and foremost my goal coming here was to earn the respect of the boys, rip in, train hard and earn a spot in the 17,” Jensen told Broncos.com.au.

“I’d grown up in North Queensland, I’d never been too far from home. That was the hardest part, coming down here.
"I knew my game was good enough, I probably needed that fresh start and fresh mindset.

“I just backed my ability, I felt like I did my job for the team, and each game I got more and more comfortable in the NRL. I had a few chances to start, I thought I grew as a footy player and as a person. “It was an easy decision to re-sign with the club, it has been enjoyable experience since I came here on day one, really loving my time here and can see where the club is going into the future.”

230209-preseason-training72.jpg

The contract extension is a massive coup of the club, with hooker Cory Paix also announcing a two-year extension earlier in the week.

Broncos Coach Kev Walters said: “Corey is one those players who sets the standards when it comes to training and preparation – he leaves no stone unturned when it comes to getting ready to play and that was reflected in the way he performed in his first season with us.

“We are delighted that he is staying with us for another two years, Corey is the kind of player we want at the heart of what we are building here at the Broncos and he will play an important role for us in the seasons ahead.”

For Jensen, 29, this season looms as a chance to further establish himself. “I want to keep getting better each game and doing my job,” he said. “I know when everyone is doing their job, we can be a top four side, that’s our goal to play finals football and we know our club is capable of that.

“Coming here initially took me out of my comfort zone, being a North Queensland kid, being in the big city was a bit hard, but it was right for me personally and from a development point of view. “I needed to get out of my comfort zone. “The forwards here are worldclass, we have some of the best forwards in the game and that was really exciting when I came here, they are really young, but extremely skillful and I’m learning a lot off them, even though I’m one of the older heads.

“I’m grateful to be part of such a good forward pack and hopefully we can do something pretty special here this year.” Than man affectionately dubbed ‘mudcrab’ believes the Broncos are on the verge of doing something special. “It was a big learning curve for us last year, a lot of young players here haven’t experienced, or played a lot of consistent first grade, the ending of last year wasn’t great for us obviously, but the players all learned a lot from the experience,” he said.

“There were a lot more positives than negatives from last season, we know we can match it with the best sides.

“We trialed great, we’ve worked really hard on our defence in the preseason, and I think that is showing. “It’s about not getting complacent and getting better every week. “We showed against the Cowboys, who had a great season last year, that we have come a long way.

“Playing Penrith in Round 1, they are the benchmark side, so there is no better way to see where we are at than to play the best straight up. “Then obviously the derby in Round 2, there is no bigger game, so it’s an exciting start to the year.”

Herbie signs with the Dolphins leaving the Broncos at the end of 2023.

The Dolphins continue to lay the foundations for a strong future with the signing of Queensland Maroons’ forward Thomas Flegler. Flegler will join the Dolphins on a four-year deal that will begin with the 2024 NRL season. He joins fellow Bronco Herbie Farnworth – who signed his own three-year deal on Friday – in becoming part of the new club’s recruitment drive for the future.

Flegler will complete his commitments with the Broncos in 2023 and move across town to join the Dolphins at the end of the season. He will add even more starch to a Dolphins’ pack that already bristles with the experience of Jesse and Kenny Bromwich, Felise Kaufusi, Jarrod Wallace and Mark Nicholls. At just 23 years of age – the same age as Farnworth – Flegler has already played a State of Origin match for the Maroons and represented the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII twice. Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader said the signing of Flegler was a huge boost for the club’s future. “We are very pleased to have secured Tom on a four-year contract starting at the end of this season,” said Reader. “He is still a young forward but already has 74 matches of NRL experience behind him, as well as representing at both State of Origin and international level. “The Dolphins have always said that our recruitment strategy was about building a club with a strong future, rather than just for season 2023. “The signature of Tom and Herbie Farnworth are great examples of that strategy at work. “We are very excited about what these two players can add to the squad we have already assembled. “It is also a huge boost for us as we get ready to play our first ever NRL match next weekend – this truly is an exhilarating time for all of the Dolphins’ members and our fans.” Born in North Queensland, Flegler played for the Tully Tigers before joining the Broncos as a teenager. He made his NRL debut in round one of the 2019 season, playing for the under-23 Australian side and winning the Broncos’ Rookie of the Year award in the same year. The Dolphins will continue preparations for their debut NRL season by hosting the Roosters in a celebration of the late Arthur Beetson.

Champion lock forward Pat Carrigan will be a Bronco until at least the end of the 2028 season.

The Wally Lewis Medal winner for Queensland's player of the series in last year's Origin triumph was already signed with the Broncos to the end 2024 - and he has now committed to a four-year extension in a huge show of faith in the club. The 25-year-old's stellar form last season also saw him make his Kangaroos debut and go on to win the World Cup in England, his 2022 heroics all the more remarkable considering he was returning from a knee reconstruction that required a gruelling nine-month rehabilitation.

During his breakout 2022 season, Carrigan averaged a huge 150 running metres (61 of those post-contact) and 32 tackles per game, as well as 21 tackle breaks and 19 offloads. A key member of Brisbane's Leadership Group and graduate of the Broncos Academy, Carrigan joins a host of teammates to commit to the club long-term.

Broncos Coach Kev Walters said: "This is a great day for the Broncos because Pat embodies what we are about as a club and he is at the heart of what we are building here together. "He has grown as a player through our club's Academy system, going on to captain our NYC team before graduating to the NRL squad and building into the player that he is today - and the impressive thing is that all he wants to do is continue to improve.

"We were all incredibly proud of what Pat achieved last year because we all saw how hard he worked to come back from serious injury, it was an inspiration to all of us here at the Broncos. "He is a key part of everything we do and to have him commit to the Broncos for another four years is really special - I'm really excited for what lies ahead for both Pat and for everyone at our club.”

Carrigan said: "I love this club and I could never imagine leaving - we are building something special here together and I wanted to make a long-term commitment to be a part of that. "A lot of us guys have been through the tough times together and now we are starting to show signs of what we can do if we work hard and work for each other.

"I'm here for the long haul and I'm excited about what we can achieve together over the years ahead.”

Mariner extends until the end of 2027

Emerging centre Deine Mariner will be a Bronco until at least the end of the 2027 season. Mariner, 19, was already signed with the Broncos to the end 2024 - and he has now committed to a three-year extension on top of that in a huge show of faith in the club.

The speedster with electric feet has been a revelation since making his Hostplus Cup debut for Broncos Affiliate Wynnum Manly Seagulls last season, scoring 12 tries in 12 games as well as making 57 tackle breaks, 12 linebreaks and running for 128 metres per game.

A Broncos Academy graduate and former Australian Schoolboys representative, Mariner made his NRL debut for the Broncos at centre in Round 20 last season against the Tigers at Suncorp Stadium, also playing in Round 21 and averaging 114 running metres over those two appearances.

Broncos Coach Kev Walters said: "Deine has been developing very nicely as part of the Broncos system for a number of years now and he was rewarded for that hard work this season with elevation to the NRL Top-30 squad. “He earned his NRL debut last year with us and has benefitted from a full preseason with the top squad leading into 2023, and we are really happy with his continued improvement and application to his training.

“Deine brings a lot to the table in terms of speed and skill and I’m impressed by him as an individual off the field as well – we are thrilled that he will be part of what we are building here at the Broncos in the years ahead.” Mariner joins a host of teammates to commit to the club's long-term including Pat Carrigan, Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, Kotoni Staggs, Kobe Hetherington, Cory Paix, Corey Jensen, Jesse Arthars, Blake Mozer and Xavier Willison.

Quotes from manager:

We’re in talks with the Broncos (on a new deal),” McIver said. “We had to get Deine over the hurdle from last year and all the palaver that went on with the Dolphins, the Broncos and the NRL integrity unit. “There are talks and discussions going on and I’m pretty confident in due course we’ll have some news that will be coming out about Deine. “Deine loves the Broncos, he has always loved the Broncos. He has supported the club since he was five years old. “The best part for him is he biding his time and learning his craft, but we should have things sorted pretty soon. “There is a pathway for Deine at the Broncos.”
