Broncos: We'll emulate '06 heroics

LEADING Broncos stars insist they can replicate Brisbane’s 2006 title heroics and break a 10-year premiership drought regardless of whether they make the top four.

Brisbane stabilised their teetering premiership campaign with a crucial 12-8 defeat of the Dragons on Thursday night in a wet and wild slugfest at WIN Stadium.

The gutsy win keeps Brisbane in the top six, but home clashes in the next fortnight against Parramatta and fifth-placed Canterbury will largely determine their top-four fate.

Fullback Darius Boyd believes Broncos players have found “trust” again after Origin trio Matt Gillett, Sam Thaiday and Josh McGuire terrorised the Dragons in their return from injury and suspension.

Boyd and Thaiday are survivors of Brisbane’s fairytale premiership win a decade ago and both are adamant the Broncos can recover to win the title from anywhere in the top eight.

“I don’t see why we can’t win it from outside the top four,” Boyd said.

“It would be nice to play home finals and all that sort of stuff, but once you make the playoffs it’s about momentum.

“It’s more important to be playing well. This (beating the Dragons) is a good start. We have four more games to really identify what has been going wrong and if we get to the finals we can challenge any team.

“Hopefully we can do what we did in 2006. That was a long time ago and it was a totally different team, but we were down on confidence at that time and it took just one win to get that self-belief again.

“Our defence (against the Dragons) was back to what we’re used to. There’s a bit of trust back in the group now, but we have to back it up against the Eels this week, we can’t just think it will happen.”

Thaiday spearheaded Brisbane’s fightback. The Maroons veteran set the tone at WIN Stadium with a rampaging run in his first hit-up on his way to 196m in his comeback from suspension.

Thaiday challenged the Broncos to prove their premiership bona fides over the next fortnight by disposing of the Eels and Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium.

“It (winning a premiership) is still a big dream, but if we string a few wins together and be in the mix in the finals, we’d love to shake things up,” Thaiday said.

“The next fortnight is crucial for us, we are coming up against two big forward packs in the Eels and the Bulldogs.

“But the beauty of that is we are at home for both games so it gives us a chance to settle at training now that we have the majority of our rep players back.

“At the end of the day, it comes down to belief. You need a belief in the team, in your structures and this was a step forward towards believing we can go all the way.

“There’s a couple of smokies in the top eight at the moment. Teams like the Sharks, Melbourne and the Cowboys are technically very good, but if we get to the finals, wherever we finish, we have the personnel to make something happen.”

One scrappy win against a tourist side like the dragons and we're talking about giving the finals a shake. Time to start walking the walk

Try emulating this then.

I don't really care what they say, i just want to see them do it out there on the field.

Time for talking is over.

It's possible if we get back to our early season form before the finals and play say the dogs first up followed by the faders/ Sharks.

If they can get themselves right I'd expect them to be better than what the were in the first 10 rounds... A couple of players were carrying that team and cracks were starting to show pretty early in the season... Now they have all been to hell and back I'm hoping for a much tougher and hungrier side, just not sure if they turned the corner yet and if there is realistically enough time to build finals footy form?

Better size Lockyer up for a jersey then. Hunt and Milf can concede their salaries to get him on the field, I'm sure he can do both their jobs.

There is enough time to build finals footy form.

It's not like teams that have made a GF have never been in the position we're currently in.

Eels in 2009. Granted, they started their run a little earlier, but they hit their best in just a couple of weeks.

There is enough time.

It comes down to how badly the players want it. We'll find out next week where they're at.

If they have the confidence back, then they can turn it around very quickly. A lot quicker than what most people think.

As I've said before, sometimes all it takes is an ugly win.

Personally, I think Broncos are gone for 2016. I just don't think they have the same hunger this year. But stranger things have happened.

If we beat eels then scrap a win against the dogs that's suddenly three wins in a row. Might be enough to jolt the boys into going for it this season

Even if Broncos do turn it around against the Eels and the Bulldogs, to me they won't win the premiership unless they beat Storm in Melbourne.

I do have some doubts whether the Broncos would have won the 2006 Grand Final if they beat Bulldogs without the need to come back from 14 points down.

Darren Lockyer said that winning in those circumstances gave the Broncos a massive confidence boost that if they play to the best of their ability, they can beat anyone.

If the Broncos can beat Storm in Melbourne, that will give them that same confidence boost.

Lockyer isn't contracted so he can do the Hayne last minute dash! No recent value so match payments should be ok. Alfie is out on the field most of the time so might as well throw a jersey on him too.

But agree if can win 3 in a row and sneak in the top 4 somehow then possible but less likely.

Happy to be wrong on our chances. As I said before no point in playing it safe and lumbering into the finals roll the dice boys let play football and not emulate Griffinball.

This weekend has shown that the Cowboys, Sharks and Storm are very beatable. If we can build up some form in the next 2-3 weeks we're a chance.

I still think we've dropped too far off the pace but this round proved those teams are beatable, even for us.
