Interesting to look at the 2009 coaches and how many spent time in Canberra:

Brisbane: Ivan Henjak (played for Canberra)
Canberra: David Furner (duh, played for and will of course be coaching them)
Cronulla: Ricky Stuart (played for Canberra)
St George-Illawarra: Wayne Bennett (coached Canberra)
Melbourne: Craig Bellamy (played for Canberra)
Nth Qld: Neil Henry (played for and coached Canberra)
Wests Tigers: Tim Sheens (coached Canberra)
Penrith: Matt Elliott (coached Canberra, think he played for them too)

That's half the clubs!
Throw in Mal Meninga as Queensland coach again and that's another. Plus Kevin Walters coaching overseas (taking over Catalans isn't he?)

you could also throw in Laurie Dailey who played for them and will be coaching Country next year and Terry Matterson was an assistant at Canberra too.

True, Daley would count. I wouldn't count Matterson though, he didn't coach first grade there, and didn't play there.

He's a fantastic selector. For Queensland :P LOL

Tim Sheens seems to be the common factor for the most part, except for Bennet.
NRL on Fox did a good story not so long back about how many Sheens coached players have gone on into coaching.
Dean Lance is another whos is trying or tried to break into top grade coaching.

I would have been happy (thinking about it now) to have got Royce Simmons from the Tigers as the new coach, he has served a long apprenticeship under Sheens.

It certainely is an interesting fact.

Alot of Players that played under Phil Gould have gone onto coach as well:

Michael Hagan (Eels)
Brad Fitler (Roosters)
John Cartwright (Titans)
Ivan Cleary (Warriors)
Steve Folkes (Bulldogs)
Kevin Moore (Bulldogs)
Royce Simmons (Coached Penrith, now assitant at the Tigers)

I wonder what it is about Gould & Sheens that make them such good coaches of future coaches?

And it suprises me how few Bennett coached players have gone onto coach at the top level? Particualrly the ones he has coached at the Broncos?

i think the fact there was only one QLD team then two for so long compared to sooo many in NSW, most of those guys have gone to coach other sides in Sydney after doing there time in the lower leagues down there. The location factor with Broncos guys may have played a part, other wise it is very strange.

Meninga, Walters, Matterson, D. Smith, Gee Gee is an assitant, Langer is floating around too. That's off the top of my head, if I research I'll find more!

By top level I meant a head coach at a NRL Club. I dont think there is any former Bronco that has gone onto coach a NRL club is there? eusa_think

Matterson is really the one who has taken the coaching to the biggest stage and am sure he will be back in the future as a head coach.

What about Wally Lewis Matt, if my memory is correct, he captain/coached the Gold Coast Seagulls. Last person to captain/coach as well. Please correct me if I'm wrong. eusa_think Pretty sure of it.

Of course! Nice pick up Hitman. He was captain coach, and had another year as just the coach

Bob Lindner coached the Crushers and played under WB at Souths for a few years.

I half wonder if it's the loyalty thing with Bennett, the guys that show an interest in coaching have stuck around the Broncos and the QCup to be near WB etc and keep learning off the big guy etc...watch over the next couple of years his underlings will start to produce the goods in the top grades: Matterson/Walters/Langer/Webcke...Lockyer etc...
