Cat amongst the pigeons a bit. Also, how much stronger would the team be if Copley and Yow Yeh were fully fit.

Kemp is close to playing FOGS. He is lucky this week to stay.

I hope in your coach for a day you find time to watch Qld Cup and see who you're picking.

Not quite accurate. He has pushed Liam Georgetown back to FOGS which should be unheard of so they obviously want him playing QCup.

It's bloody ridiculous - if anyone should make way for Kemp it should be Paul Ivan and have Kemp or Berryman play in the centres.

:scared: you're crazy, Kemp is the man, stop with your heresy.

I think he's been terrible, I saw Georgetown is dropped which made me think Kemp can't be far behind. No way Kemp has been better than Georgetown.

Kemp will do fine in first grade playing for Broncos, he will be our best winger.

Mate I agree. 1000%. Problem lies with the Redcliffe coach here.

But the fact that Kemp is picked ahead of him makes me think that they want Kemp there.

It is all well and good to play fantasy coach and admittedly there is a couple of changes I'd like to see made to the side but for mine, the biggest problem we have is the brand of football we're playing.

Our strength is in our forward pack, yet I don't feel like our playmakers (McCullough, Wallace, Prince, Norman & Hunt) are consistent in organising them. A player like Matt Gillett should not be taking as many plain hit ups as he has to - he should be the type of player to run off a Scott Prince, Justin Hodges or Corey Norman - that's where he shines. Similar story with Alex Glenn who I feel isn't being given the room to run the lines which netted us an impressive 13 tries last year. I feel like our offence is just very shallow and this is how it usually goes down...

. One off the ruck for three tackles. Hope for an offload and play off the back of it. This either has a positive or negative effect on the play.
. Usually a wasted tackle because McCullough uses all the momentum to try and score from dummy half, or a forward (usually Parker) lumbers up and is comfortably tackled by the defence, forcing a slow play the ball.
. Long shift to either the right or left, which is usually so well telegraphed that the defence reacts before our offence is able to make the play.
. Either long shift back the other way or a cross field kick to end the set.

The problem is two fold. Firstly, it's too cliche. If fans like us can see it, imagine what a team of coaches - who are paid to analyse other teams - are capable of.

Second, that structure is flawed. The problem is that our settling plays suck and that our playmakers have little to no momentum to work off of and as a result, little room to create opportunities, which is why they're forced to play the percentages and just hoist up a cross-field kick into the corner.

That wouldn't be such a bad option, if our defence was awesome, but it isn't. There are issues we have that no amount of good coaching will fix, Prince is never going to become the Axe, that's just the truth, but I feel like our main problem is attitude. There are times where our defence is awesome. See that set where Prince put the bomb up and Gillett SMASHED GI? That was a great set. Yet, the boys couldn't keep it up and in fact were at times clearly intimidated by the Souths pack (particulary young Georgey Boy). Whatever Toovey is doing at Manly with his side in defence is what the Broncos need to do. Sometimes, I reckon Manly just want to defend, they smash players, they hurt them and they win the ruck with their defence. Our defence isn't the total shits, I feel like they're very courageous at times and we tend to recover quite well in broken play, but we just allow that broken play to happen too often. That's been a problem for a long time and goes all the way back to Bennett.

It needs to be fixed, especially if Hook persists with a conservative brand of football, which honestly, I don't have a huge problem with given our current strengths and weaknesses, but could be better.

I'm in no way saying Hook is an idiot, I'm sure he's aware of the problems and I'm aware that these problems cannot be fixed in the course of two months of football. I hope we grow and see improvements in these areas.

You've contradicted yourself Pete :winky:

You said it yourself - the problems are the cliched, flawed structured, conservative brand of football which the coach is responsible for implementing.

We did see improvement against the Storm (2nd half), Titans and Cowboys and I thought we had really turned a corner there. I don't understand how we can play the style of footy that wins games then it disappears the next week.

Yes defence is an attitude thing and we need to harden the **** up, but why not make it easier by knowing we have the structure and game plan to put on points when we need them and not get bogged down worrying about having to defend a marginal lead. It gets even worse when you're trying to reign in a defecit.

Allow me to re-phrase.

I don't have a problem with a conservative approach, which I believe at the heart of it is what Griffin is after, my problem is that our current brand isn't consistent in that style and tries to compromise by including offensive players like Prince. It also relies too heavily on long lateral ball movement and not enough directness.

The second half against the Titans is a good example of a consistent conservative game plan coming through. All Wallace did in the second half was bomb it to the corner, forcing the Titans to work it out deep from their own half and giving the Broncos all the field position. It still took the Broncos an age to put the Titans away but they were in control.

The difference between the Cowboys and Tigers game was attitude. Cowboys really pushed the Broncos and the boys were determined to fight it out until the end. In the Tigers game we got out to an early lead and then played some very soft football.

Why a conservative approach over an expansive approach? Because it suits our current roster. That isn't to say we should play one out football and kick to the corners all the time but we don't have the players to do those outside, inside plays or attempt chip kicks for etc. Our strength is in our forwards and it's about utilising them to the best of their ability that is going to score us our victories.

Tallis is making a fair point when he reckons we need another good big boppa into the side. Given the lack of backs, I wouldn't begrudge the club signing a good prop forward to compliment our hard workers like Hannant and Parker.

Stagg offers nothing from the bench, get another forward in there instead.

I'd love a Benji Marshall kind of player just without the slumps and injuries to play alongside a B.Hunt in the halves with a Barba/Bond at the back.

Qcup fans, are there any Benji style players in the system?
