TIMING is everything. As the Newcastle Knights prepared to announce Coke as a new sponsor yesterday, it emerged one of their players had been arrested by police, who said he was a kingpin in a drugs distribution network supplying ''coke'' - among other substances - on the North Coast.

The Newcastle Local Court was told yesterday police would submit evidence Danny Wicks had been supplying drugs to other Newcastle players.

Given the nature of these charges, this surely the worst criminal charge ever for a current NRL player?

This shouldn't reflect badly on the NRL or the Knights (unless there are a ton of druggies in ther ranks) because there is always a criminal element in society and I can't see any internal controls being able to detect this.

Even with these new allegations, I still stand by deleting Kaz's earlier post as it could have been intpreted as the whole team/club being on drugs and was written with no supporting anything - like you say we really can't be too careful with lawyers sniffing around.

Anyway back to the allegations WOW!!! Seriously I know that drugs really is a societal issue, but the Knights club are really fighting a battle here with the number of players that have been done for some drug offence - McDougall, O'Davis, Johns, now Wicks and latest allegations of him supplying other team-mates. I really feel for the Knights club and the Newcastle community and really hope they can all pull together and get through this latest nightmare and that the whole NRL community can play a major role in addressing the drugs issue not just in the game but in society.

I drove past Charlestown Police Station on my way home today.

It was a slight diversion, but i felt it would be worth it if i could gather some information.

Unfortunately there was no sign of Danny Wicks or his associates. Although, i think i spotted a soft drink dispensing machine in the foyer of the police station. I was driving so i cannot be certain, but it looked awfully similar.
