NEWS Dave strikes

It won’t include me. As much as I love the guy and what he does on field, I’m not sad if he walks away wanting a million dollars or more over 10 years, that isn’t good business. It’ll definitely hurt in the short term but definitely won’t inthe medium to long turn.
I actually think it’s his manager who has come up with this to try and take advantage of our perceived desperation to get some good signings.
Hopefully the club doesn’t buy it although I would have been happier if Donaghy hadn’t kicked this upstairs to Morris and the board who have almost zero football smarts and are liable to do anything.

I think Haas seems more important than what he actually should be because of how rubbish the rest of the side is. If the Brobcos had a good spine and were always competitive you could easily get away with less talented props on considerably less money than 1M a year.
Not saying he might not be worth that kind of money some day, just like Taumalolo, but it would probably only be to middling clubs who don't have money tied up in a quality spine.

If another club wants to pay 1M for Haas he should go there. Period.

Storm wouldn't do it. Roosters wouldn't do it. Broncos shouldn't do it.

I think the kicking upstairs is a really smart way for DD to say sorry but I can't offer that, I really wanted to though. But here's what we can offer.

It's smart negotiations to keep Haas feeling wanted without outright rejecting his first offer.

I agree 1m is too much but big money props are worth it. Penrith do it. Roosters don't have anyone worth doing it. Melbourne are paying solo moaner 700k, big Tino 750k, Klemmer 800k, the elite middles are worth big money no question.

Backrowers far less so. Centres/Wingers is where you need budget solid dependable types that don't cost bank unless you have a genuine star like a Staggs who is worth it.

Prop is IMO without question the most important role after spine players.

Haas effectively gives us a free interchange with his motor while still being elite himself (rather than plodding big minutes like a Woods/Tolman type)

He's worth 800k all day and I hope the club can work out an extension so he has 6-7 years at 800k.

Deadlines don’t work but **** it let’s give it a shot.

Another brick in the wall courtesy of DD and the bespectacled one.

I'm almost desperate to see whether DD has the basis of the Storm's concept of identifying and retaining players in lower grades until such times as they are ready. Pretty hard for us as everything we do is doubly scrutinized by the media.

I have a feeling we'll get Walsh back in a few years time if not sooner when the reality of living in NZ starts to bite and it is exacerbated by the Warriors being perennial also rans.

They do actually work Players/agents cant hold us for ransom anymore. When they have an offer its either sign it or look elsewhere. Also gives us plenty of time to look for suitable replacements should the need arise for such.

It's all well and good to say we're imposing deadlines but if we table an offer to Haas and the deadline expires do you really think they'll stick to their guns?

scenes when we play hardball with Haas, the forum might completely lose it.
Depends on the figure we are talking about, if it's an unrealistic amount over a very long stretch of time I'd be against signing that contract, I wasn't upset we stood our ground with Fifita and again if we are talking that money with Haas I wouldn't either. If the figure is high but a shorter length of time that might leave room for consideration and if it's a fair amount for a longterm contract there is value there. As for deadlines got no problems there though I still don't think they will treat each player the same across the board there.

Whilst it's good news, let's not kid ourselves - contractual deadlines are part of parcel of 'real life' and any of you fine folks probably could have put this in place if you were paid $200k a year as "GM of Football".

That its taken this long to impose that rule, is flabbergasting.

Of course, depending upon definition.
Deadlines provide guidance, but they aren't or don't have to be enforced to the hour.
It means there's a guide to work towards. If the player hasn't signed by the deadline you meet with them again, say we need to sort it out in the next few days, and then if still nothing you move on planning for the future without them. Doesn't mean you rip up the offer and if they come to you tomorrow and want to sign you say "no, you missed the deadline" but you move forward and look at other options. You don't sit on your hands and miss good potential signings because you are keeping money hoping they sign. When the deadline passes you just say well we are exploring our options too. It's really that simple

That's exactly what we did with Petero IIRC.

Set a deadline, they didn't accept, we told them the offer is off and we're looking elsewhere.

We have two more years to re-sign Haas to a long deal. If its contract year then yes, stick to your deadline and then move on regardless of the player. Hopefully the club is in a much better position now moving forward that we wont even be letting the players enter the open market moving on as they are secured well before the 1 November deadline.
