So one of the main talking points to emerge out of the Bulldogs upset over the Storm was Ennis patting Cam Smith on the head after Will Chambers came up with a mistake. This caused a number of people to perk up about the state of the game and the incident in general.

A few questions...

Was it really that big of an issue or just sour grapes?

Should the Australian captain be shown more respect than the average player?

Is the head tap a tactic that is used to deliberately start fights and are the players powerless to do anything about it?

Sour grapes and no. He's trying to deflect their poor performance by making another headline.

Seriously though it just makes Ennis look like a dick. What does he hope to achieve.

Putting him off his game? That's Ennis in a nutshell, he might be a dick but he does everything within the rules, kinda like Melbourne and their wrestling rubbish.

Sour grapes at not winning. He wouldn't have a problem if Smith was doing it.

It's just a pat on the head. Smith can be a bit of a grub as well.

There was nothing in the head rub. But when Smith pushes him away, Ennis comes back for another, and gets angry when Smith tries to swat him off again, that's Ennis being a bitch. Storm really have nothing to whinge about, but as has been said above, it makes Ennis look like a pathetic grub.

The problem is that Ennis has been pulling this type of play for sometime - particularly against Souths where he just kept niggling at Reynolds over and over to the point where Adam had to take it into his own hands because lord knows the referees weren't going to do anything about it.

I also think the Australian captain should be shown a degree of respect. I know it's a Melbourne player so some on here won't care but if Ennis did that to Lockyer I'd be furious.

I don't like Ennis one bit but i don't think being the Australian Captain should make you immune from some niggle if you make a mistake.

Ennis patted his head a second time because he got a reaction the first time which is what the grubby piece of shit feeds off.

Really? This is even a ting?

There's much worse things than a tap or rub on the head. Get over it, you're a footy player.

I respect Ennis more and more as a footy player.

I wish he'd never left the Broncos ...

This is my opinion as well.

Although I don't agree with the premise that the Australian captain deserves more respect than any other player because of his title, I do think that some players deserve more respect due to their stature in the game. For example, Gallen deserves no respect for being NSW's captain, because he's a fucking grub of the highest order.

Lockyer is a prime example where I would not tolerate that type of behaviour, and I think a Smith, Thurston or Cronk are in the same league, like a Fittler or Stuart would've been in the past for example.

What Ennis did is typical psychological destabilisation tactics, to get the target unnerved and annoyed and take him of his game and concentration, and as good as Ennis is at it, it is also as grubby as it gets. This was just Ennis rubbing it in, like a 8 y/o would...

Sorry symbolsoup... it deserves anything but respect, it deserves contempt!

Sportsmanship and playing in the spirit of the game died a long time ago.

Celebrating the other team's errors rather than your own skill or efforts.

Ennis is a dick though. Karma is a bitch. Achieved nothing in his career versus Cameron Smith.

It was brought up by Brett Finch on commentary asking Lockyer and Joey if they ever copped that sort of shit when they played. Lockyer was tentative when answering so the answer was obvious that he had. The illegal shit that Lockyer copped is 90% of the reason Thaiday is referred to as "Third Man In". Because the grubs would always hit Lockyer, and even Wallace, late and high. Constantly. And the guys who did it were 30kg bigger than them.

Also I can't believe you added Stuart to your list! While I haven't seen all of his games or anything, I've seen a fair bit and he was one of the original guys who would cheat to get ahead. He used to constantly hold players on top of him to milk penalties all the time.

Ennis and Reynolds go over the top with the niggle. It's unnecessary and absolutely should result in more penalties. Ben Hunt got penalized for having his hand on the person playing the ball. Something that happens during almost every single play the ball. Whilst it's currently not illegal to be an annoying fuckwit, it should be. Based on disrupting the game or something similar. These guys weren't this bad before the punch was banned and I'd bet they would fall into a little ball on the ground if someone actually threw a punch their way.

They're a blight on our game.

Hayne's hit on Lockyer in the 2008 RLWC (while playing for Fiji)

Legal sure, but in a losing Fiji team because David Williams is keeping you out of best team in the world, but cheap.

I think the joke is on any player that still takes the bait Ennis lays out .. you've only got to listen to the way he speaks off the field to realise what a well spoken, inteligent bloke he is... Anyone with half an ounce of sense would just laugh at his on-field acting, pat him on the head and say "good one Mick" ...

Pretty much my thoughts as well. It's a nothing incident that happens numerous times every game. Going back for a 2nd dig immediately is asking for trouble though.

I agree that he does this stuff all the time but the Reynolds crap was far worse IMO.
