I'm sorry - but fuckin what!!!

Who on earth sanctioned this deal at the Knights?

No wonder Parra said "Yeh champ, it's been nice and all, but....seeya".

Would "you" sanction so much of your salary cap into two players like him and Ponga?

Sure, i admit Newcastle are now completely out of ideas in terms on who their long-term halves should be.

And yes, a guy who has been coasting for 2 years behind Moses "might" be ready to take on the responsibilty of leading a team himself.

But Jesus.....:ouch:

In fact, I would have thrown a big deal at Fogarty and tried to shake him free from Canberra early. They will be wanting to get games into Sanders at some point I'm sure and Fogarty is exactly what Newcastle needs and would have been half of what they've thrown at Brown.

Come to think of it - which deal will work out better.

Brown to the Knights.

Luai to the Tigers?
Luai to the Tigers has a much better chance of succeeding... that tigers roster is not that bad and on paper they have a great spine (Bula, Galvin, Luai & Api).

Luai also showed that he could step up and be the man when Cleary went down last year... unlike Brown.

Tigers issue is Benji being so inexperienced as a coach... if they had Flanno as coach they would be fighting or in the 8

He and Ricky are very tight. I think Ricky was even directly involved in his contract negotiations. Bugger all chance he's leaving Canberra.

This is an easy one, Luai, or anyone for that matter, on a five year deal vs Brown or basically anyone on a ten year deal, I'd be more comfortable with the five year deal every single time.

Even 5 year deals should only be for the top maybe 5-10 players in the entire comp, and Brown isn't in that category at all.

As for 10 years, MAYBE Cleary 2-3 years ago (he's already 27 now) but outside of that, absolutely no one.

Ricky isn't stupid, he knows he is an extremely underrated player in Fogarty, he is one of the best halfbacks in the comp purely because he has a huge boot. If you have a player with a huge boot in this comp, you will always be in a game because even if your forwards are getting belted, they can still help you get out of trouble.

But if I were Newcastle, I'd be throwing a million at him for 3 years instead of this stupid deal for Brown because as much as Ricky might love him, I don't think Canberra would match that.

Not to mention that Fogarty creates turnovers from his torpedo bombs just from the back 3 being unable to catch them.

Objectively, I suspect Knights must know Ponga is out the door when his contract ends, because they'd be mad to have 2 players on $1.3m / Year in their team - it's way too much of the cap to have tied up in 2 players, one of which has a significant injury history.

Subjectively, this kind of money (and contract length) for a player as average as Brown is insanity. He has looked awful without Moses next to him at Parra and done nothing to prove he can be a marquee player - which is what you expect for this sort of money. For $1.3m / Year, you expect the player to win premierships, Dally M's or both. Brown probably wouldn't even make the first grade squad at a number of clubs.

The argument that with the cap increasing over the 10 year life of the deal, so in half a decade Brown's contract will only be above average money is also ridiculous. With the entire team hamstrung by this contract I wouldn't be surprised if, after 4-5 dismal losing seasons, Brown joins the club of huge money halves playing reserve grade alongside illustrious names like Chris Sandow, Ash Taylor and Anthony Milford for the last half of his deal.

I honestly don't have a clue what Newcastle are thinking.

Straight out of the 2019 Broncos recruitment strategy.

Player options everywhere!!

Feel for the Newcastle fans, that would make me livid.

You either have a longer contract at a reduce price, or a shorter term contract at an increased price. NOT BOTH.

This will go down as an all time horror contract. Brown is a top tier #6, nothing more. I think he's worth up to the 900k mark for a max contract of 4 years. I think this will end up losing them Ponga.

On that, what makes him a top tier 6? I'm genuinely asking because I can't think of a single outstanding quality that he has.

Honestly, in my opinion, Newcastle would have even been better spending half what they've spent over half the years on someone like Bevan French.

Even if you can convince me Brown is a top tier 6, that isn't even what Newcastle need.

And on that, which big name 6s would even come close to worth that money outside of say Munster and perhaps Dearden? We even feel we've overpaid for Mam and he's much better than Brown.

If clubs are this desperate for halves then it’s only a matter of time before we get a repeat of Ash Taylor or Walsh (clubs throwing insane money at players with zero or close to zero experience) with Black imo.

I think the dollars are probably fine, Gus Gould said what I expect is the truth that the spine players are underpaid, so you don't offer JT, Fifita, even Haas potentially, the big bikkies, but it's ok to offer a quality spine player a double salary, which is all 1.3-1.4M is. The 10 years seems nuts though, you would want some pretty strong clauses in there to protect the club. What it's also saying is the next Andrew John's from the Newcastle nursery is going to end up playing for the Roosters.

Despite the fact that I think the money is too much, it's the length that baffles me the most. I get Newcastle making him a massive offer to lure him there...but for 10yrs? Madness.

Black doesn't have the buzz around him like Walsh and Taylor did. Mozer on the other hand could be a prime candidate
