ESL English Super League

Do we bring him back into the fold now that Kevvie is looking for new assistants 🤔🤔

I don’t know. He had a great first season with Leeds and they’ve gone down hill massively since. I also find him to be really unlikeable and comes across as up himself. His gum chewing also annoys me. But hey, we need some fresh ideas and maybe he is it.

Leeds have been terrible. Really weak in defence, poor in attack. Their recruitment has been awful, only Croft has really done well for them.

Sounds like Brad Arthur is going to take over.

What a grand final! French going all Mam in the GF but the biggest talking point - Nsemba was out cold...and passed his HIA to come back on. Controversial.

And...there was HAIL.

Super League’s playoffs have been thrown into turmoil after Leigh Leopards’ owner threatened to withdraw his side from their semi‑final against Wigan on Friday over a row surrounding ticketing allocations.

With the winners progressing to the grand final at Old Trafford next Saturday, Leigh are aiming to reach the showpiece for the first time, but their participation in the game is in doubt.

"Sorry guys, no grand final this year"

Hull KR are just the 5th club in history to win the ESL.

This is in the Super League era that started in '96.

I can’t believe no one has signed Willie Peters. He’s exactly what the Gold Coast, Newcastle, North Queensland, Manly and the Tigers (and probably more) need.

I believe Anasta was saying he wants to stay coaching in the ESL right now.

In fact I believe he actually turned down that chance to interview for the Knights job

I think Willie is too smart to go to any of the basket case clubs. I could see him at Manly or the Cows though.

Is Manly not considered to be a basket case 🤔🤔

Unfortunately I think cows could be the one he's lining up

They are kind of a basket case i guess, but not in the same class as somebody like the tigers!
Yeah I guess their front office isn't horrendous and making really poor recruitment decisions, but thinking more about walking into a club that likely still has poor facilities and owners that like to penny pinch.

Also do they have much when it comes to juniors?

I don't really hear about them being a powerhouse across junior comps in the same way that west Sydney clubs are.

I'd think Peters will want to head to a club with pathways and facilities, which cows have both... that gives him the opportunity to set up a system from top to bottom.

So long as the NRL allow the clubs to be operated as boys clubs, they'll never be anything more than making up the numbers. They should be forced to get real CEOs, real board members, and real staff who aren't family or mates of mates of mates.

So long as the NRL allows itself to be run like an old boys/mates club it will forever be 'National' in name only.

The Sydney media and by extension many of the pundits associated with those teams ensure the whole comp is biased and Sydney-centric.

Not sure which podcast it was but it had Beau Ryan and another ex-footy player whinging that the GF would be crap this year because there was no Sydney team involved. This is the attitude of the majority of the Sydney based people involved in our game.

If they really wanted it to be a 'national' comp they would ensure the Grand Final was played on a nationwide basis and let each of the participating states host the final on a rotating basis. Sure they could give Sydney a higher ratio of finals.

For instance every second year it could be played outside of Sydney. They should even consider every fourth year it being played in NZ and, or PNG alternatively.

For sure. Regarding the Grand Final, I think Brisbane only building a 60odd k stadium will still **** the plan of moving it around.

They need the numbers, and 20k less punters is a big drop. If QLD want it, we need a bigger stadium. PNG stadium is only 15k for example, it should never ever be played there. But you can't send it anywhere else, and exclude Brisbane.

I dunno, it's a tough one. Stadiums in Australia are pretty poor really, which makes the money bit hard.

Kevvie has him as his off sider for this Kangaroo tour .

Re: PNG much of that money our government is forking out could also be topped up in aide money and pay for a 50 -60K stadium to be built much in the same way as the Chinese move in and provide interest free loans and the expertise to build the roads and infrastructure in 3rd world countries.

In doing so we ensure influence in that region and at the same time increase the popularity and reach of the game.

I'm quite sure if they built a 100k stadium up there they'd still fill it.

And as soon as the S.A. government clocks the amount of coin that is dropped into the host state's coffers they'd be mad keen to get a team into the comp too so they could host a Grand Final every couple of years. If the NRL wants to be truly National they need to have a long hard look at what that means.

Qld would pay a premium to get hosting rights as it would draw huge tourism numbers... that would make up for any shortfall in ticket sales.

At the moment Accor has a monopoly on hosting rights... noway are they getting a decent deal out of that, it's just to appease the Sydney dinosaurs.

Kent still pushes that all prelims should be played in Sydney because of "tradition".

Apparently it is still called NSWRL and played with 90% Sydney teams.

The "tradition" side is laughable anyway... they used to play GF's out of the SCG... but they were happy to move it away when a shiny new stadium popped up

A great 60K stadium is perfect for the best live experience for a rectangular field. Let's not go down the 100K stadium for a square field like in Michigan or an oval where you are so far away from the action.

MCG is massively overrated as a non-AFL venue. For AFL works because the game uses the whole ground and you get close to the action. I live in Melbourne and would never watch a rugby league game there. Even cricket there is not that great. MCG gets filled or twice a year. Largely because Melbourne population can support it and strongly attend games and big events.

TV rights dollars are becoming more important than stadium seats. If the live venue brings a great experience, then it will translate to the public to attend and on TV..
