apparently Aussie video assistant referee Shaun Evans ref has become the centre of controversy at the world cup so far
Prior to the Germany vs. Curaçao match, the broadcast cut to the VAR hub in Dallas, introducing Evans and his officiating team. During the introduction, Evans held his hand near his thigh and made an upside-down "OK" sign
This gesture was originally started on that Malcom in the middle tv show but has since been co-opted by far-right groups and designated as a white supremacist hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League.
While some viewers and anti-discrimination groups accused him of making a "white power" symbol, Evans explained it was an unintentional, subconscious twitch related to the playground "circle game"
The FIFA disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and found no evidence that Evans breached their disciplinary code, clearing him of any deliberate wrongdoing
