Always difficult to predict the future, particularly with sport where 5 minutes can be a long time. Let's do a comparison to the past. Let's compare the 96 side and see where they were at in '91, the end of the Lewis era. Robbie O'Davis - 19, year off playing first grade. Brett Dallas - 17, didn't become an NRL regular until '93 Steve Renouf - 21, had made his Origin debut albeit off the bench. Matt Sing - 16, 2 years shy off making his NRL debut. Wendell Sailor - 17, didn't become an NRL regular until '94 Jason Smith - 19, didn't become a regular first grader until '93 Allan Langer - 25, an Origin great with a not so great record. Tony Hearn - 22, didn't make his debut until '92. Wayne Bartrim - 20, had just made his debut that season. Gary Larson - 24, had just made his Origin debut. Trevor Gillmeister - 27, an Origin mainstay at that point. Brad Thorn - 16, made his debut in '94. Billy Moore - 20, had played first grade since '89. Alan Cann - 20, made his club debut the previous year. Adrian Lam - 21, wouldn't play first grade until '94. Craig Greenhill - 19, wouldn't play first grade until '95. Michael Hancock - 22, made his Origin debut in '89. Mark Coyne - 24, first grade regular and had made his Origin debut off the bench in 1990. Julian O'Neil - 19, had just made his first grade debut. Steve Walters - 26, arguably the best hooker in the game & one of our best that series. Had only made his Origin debut the season before. Andrew Gee - 21, made his Origin debut the series before. Kevin Walters - 24, just made his debut for Queensland. Willie Carne - 22, one of the best wingers in the game at the time. Dale Shearer - 26, an Origin mainstay and a hero who scored the match winner. Owen Cunningham - 24, had been playing first grade for 5 years at that point, only played one true Origin game though. That list displays two things. Just how much the divide of ARL & SL hurt the Queensland side. So many Origin regulars left out for the '95 side then brought back in after a loss. Doesn't seem like the QRL was on the same page from the get-go. But 2, how many players weren't even on the radar at the time. Particularly when it comes to backs. You really have to gamble when it comes to making these predictions so you could see the most obscure name on there and sure enough it could be correct in 5 years time. Probably all common knowledge, but it's sort of interesting when put into practice.
