THE desperate Broncos have turned to club legends in an attempt to lift the 2009 squad out of the doldrums and keep the proud finals record intact.
A host of former players, including club legends Shane Webcke and Steve Renouf, arrived at Red Hill this morning to talk to the current players and, in some cases, train with them.
Brisbane has made the finals for 17 years straight but that record is under threat with the 2009 team tumbling to a series of embarrassing losses, including last Saturday's record 56-0 loss to the Raiders.

Former players responded to the crisis by arriving for training today .

Webcke and Renouf were joined by the likes of Kerrod Walters, Alan Cann, Willie Carne, Darren Smith, Mick de Vere, Chris Johns and John Plath.

The Broncos play the Sharks at Suncorp Stadium on Monday night and must win to have any hope of making the finals.

This is little too late for my likings. Why does it take a crisis for management to realise that this is a brilliant idea?
This should be the norm. pay Webby what he wants for next year and keep him at every training.

I just want the players to know that these guys will be there the day AFTER the game so they have to look them in the eye....

why didnt stu kelly get am invite to training ? . Good thinking from the club very over due though . Certainly need more former forwards au the club in coaching capacity

Kelly was invited and such is his brilliance he turned up at Parramatta Stadium ready to divulge some of his wisdom.

LOL @ Webcke returning to help after Hunt has declared he is leaving.Webcke was treated shamefully earlier in the season.

i read it was organised before the thrashings began, so dunno wat to make of it

yay, go plathy!!!! could just imagine Alan Cann giving lessons to Karmichael on how to sidestep

I thought Webcke left because Thaiday was cut up at him, not Hunt?

Scotty - the rumour, perhaps baseless is that Hunt was stirring the pot big time.I dont believe for a minute that Webcke would leave simply because someone was upset with him.Do you ?

Alfie organised this a month ago ....

.. it's only weird timing that the ex-players show up[ after a flogging at the hands of the Raiders.

I agree with whoever posted above that the ex-players should all be put on the books to help instill a real sense of pride in the Broncos jumper.

I remember back in the days when the ex-players were all regulars around the club all through the year. Not necessarily in a formal capacity or doing anything official, but just being there, keeping the current players aware of the club's history and heritage and reminding them how privlidged they are to play for the Broncos (just by their precence, not by specifically telling them), and also just being there if any of the current crop wanted to discuss anything. They also helped keep the guys grounded and would tell them to pull their head in if they were starting to get out of line before it got too bad. Was a big part of what made the club a family of sorts and they would all do just about anything for each other. I think this has fallen by the way-side over the past few years - which has probably contributed in a small way to the gradual decline in the players' passion and pride for the Broncos jersey. The old boys need to just be around.

fair point but the decision was still up to Webbie in the end... is what I believe.

I'm a bit late on this thread but this looks exactly like what Qld have been doing in their camps for the last 4 years, and something I have been thinking the Broncos should do for a while.

Mrs Long I agree, make sure they're there after the game as well, and that before the game the current mob know they will be there after.

Though I agree with you that it obviously has been a successful stragety and foundation of the current QLD side. I myself don't think it necessarily 'wins' you footy games. Maybe it gives the players some perspectives and stronger mentality but I'm of the belief that there are other things you have to do right before you do something like that.

Nevertheless maybe it is what the Broncs need right now.

I don't think it should be a formal thing, or all of them there en masse because then it loses it's impact. But would love for the old guys to just generally be around, kind of in the background, there as a reminder or, a sounding board, or to have a quiet word if a player or 2 are starting to get out of line.
