Former rugby league star, Craig Field, allegedly 'king hit' a man last night leaving him in a critical condition on life support in northern NSW.

Field, a 39-year-old veteran of 183 first grade rugby league games in Australia, was arrested overnight for allegedly punching 51-year-man local Kelvin Kane outside the Kingscliff Beach Hotel about 9.15pm.

The blow knocked the victim to the ground and he was unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.

"King hit" .......doesn't that indicate that Field hit the guy either from behind or when he wasn't looking/expecting it?

Not surprising from the little grub.......

ABC News are reporting that the bloke died a short time ago. Field is now facing a murder charge.

Wow that's shocking :(
Must be devastating for that mans family to find out their dad died because some moron blinded him with a punch :( Condolences to the mans family and I hope Craig Field cops the full force of law if found guilty.

Unbelievable. Tragic. Completely unnecessary.

This shows just how close all those other league players who get relative slaps on the wrist for assaults come from something far more serious. It baffles my why assaults are treated so leniently when it just takes a bad fall on the part of the victim to result in a very serious outcome.

Absolute tragedy.

This is now the 2nd king hit death in the month. So sad for the family.

I just hope this doesn't paint bad for what has been a pretty good NRL season with off field issues. He may have been a former rugby league player but should not be painted as an NRL star.

Totally agree with Twiztid. Let's hope this incident doesn't smear the season which has been a very good one varying off-field incidents and controversy. RIP to the guy that died.

How will it marr the season? It was between a 51 year old local publican and a 39 year old electrician from Kingscliffe. The fact he played league quite a long time ago makes no difference and won't be bad "PR" for the game in any way shape or form.

I think it really depends on how the media portray it. If they try and play up the "nrl star" part, then the general population might not be able to see it for what it is. I don't think it will marr the season, but it still might not be the best look.

Irrespective of how the media portray it the general public will see it for what it is. The media have very little to gain from it ,other than having an obligation to mention his league affiliation it will just be a case of reporting the facts and those facts that are news/noteworthy. Media people know they will have to work with Rugby League in the future, I think they will tead carefully. Field was a grub in his day and if I remember correctly had a few unsavoury associates. The man who died was once someones little boy. Cannot help feeling sorry for the ones who feel his loss.

Headlines like Former NRL star, Rugby League legend, Former NRL player. And statements like in a blow to the the sport's reputation, Rugby League is embriod in another scandal, Controversy has rocked Rugby League again.

What a load of... This story isn't rocking rugby league.

Didn't say it was. The way the media could cover it could blow it out of proportion. It's been kept quit so far.

Honestly I think the whole "former NRL player" will be low key in this case, because he's long since retired, was not exactly revered in the game anyway, and has been in relative obscurity since he retired from the NRL in 2001 (other than his infamous burglary hoax about 5 years ago). Nobody really cares about him, so it'll just be a fairly normal murder trial (if there is such a thing).

Bump

Craig Field has just been sentanced to 10 years with a non parole period of 7 years for his role in the murder.

Not enough but the non parole part is good..meaning he serves at least 70% of his sentence. He was always a grub and now he is correctly labelled... A criminal.
