Former players you hated/didn't rate, that everyone else loved/rated

Benny's favourites (blokes who got picked regardless of performance) Dane Carlaw, Stu Kelly, Neville Costigan, Scott Minto, Greg Eastwood, Joel Moon, Brad Meyers, Carl Webb
take carl webb out and i agree.

bloke was awesome, but was as far from one of bennetts favourites as you can get.

Bennett stuck "charlie" at lock one day (I think against the warriors at ANZ circa 2003 - might even have been the last game ever at ANZ) yuck!!!! Oh and I forgot Ashton Sims...cost us a game against Penrith one night cause he didn't get off his butt and get to marker (Kingston just dove over the line...maybe 2009 that was...lost about 22 - 12 or 22 - 10 or something like that)

Andrew Gee.

Especially circa 2002-03. Should have retired after his Round 7 2002 performance against the Knights, he was never going to top it or remotely come close to it again. Just a massive penalty magnet who lacked a reasonable motor. Still shudder at all the times he'd give away a dumb penalty during our slump in 03.

Loved gee gee but remember that penalty he gave away against the Roosters where he tapped the ball wrongly by not placing it on the ground? about 1996 I reckon.....lovable bonehead!!!!! lol

Oh god I completely forgot about that game. Mind you, that has to be the most pedantic decision I've seen in my life.

I just remember him giving away doping penalties at crucial times and getting a free ride into the Origin side although we could have gone for better long term options.

that game is burnt into my memory because we didn't get a penalty for a whole half....not one (never happened in those days)....I think even the NRL was embarressed about the conduct of the whistle blower that night

We always thought Paul McBlane treated the Broncos heartlessly. Turns out it was a medical condition.

Did anyone actually rate Minto?

I used to hate seeing Tate get the ball too. He really was such a ball hog and there were so many instances where a try would go begging because of it.

Dane Carlaw is probably the biggest one for me, every time he got the ball I would cringe but he somehow made QLD teams?

BHQ did, along with pretty much every other player to ever pull on a broncos jersey. steve michaels was the next steve renouf around here.

That is another one Renouf. He was fast and in the right place a lot but wasn't the superb player people seemed to make out. But I didn't think Minto got that respect. That is amusing to find out.

I really think you overstate how highly BHQ rated Minto. It was praise as a cult player because he was so ugly, so ungainly and so much like Wayne Bennett in appearance that it was uncanny. His flying Gazelle try in golden point just added to his folklore.

I don't think anyone actually rated him as a particularly good player, and nobody batted an eyelid when he left.

to quote Gus - no no no no no.

Renouf was one of the best centres the game has ever and will ever see. his fend would make greg inglis feel insecure about his own.

I wish I could find vision of it, but he scored a try against Penrith in 1999 which boggled my mind. If I remember it correctly, he got the ball with 4 defenders in front of him. He stepped, stepped, fended and scored. It was unbelievable, especially considering his age and injuries and the fact he was about to retire.

I always liked him as a player, but towards the end of his second stint here, Brad Thorn was starting to annoy me.

Was far too slow and cumbersome to be playing first grade, and he started making a habit of giving away cheap penalties for being offside, lying on the attacker too long, etc.

That was only towards the end of his time at the club, he was a champ for the rest of his tenure at the Broncos!

brad thorn was another of the 'come back home to us to retire' signings. he was very, very bad in his last few years. was actually sad to see.

The Webcke, Civoniceiva and Thorn combination was one of the key reasons the Broncos won the 06 premiership.

It was only 07 where he became a bit of a liability, and even then he had his moments.

He was a massive liability in 2005 too. His first year back from Union, he was just soooooo slow.
