CRICKET General Cricket Discussion - 2023/24

Travis Head! Struck at almost 4 a ball! Australia made 150+ in under 10 overs.

Again !
Cricket these days is only for the Indian market . I didn`t even know Australia were playing ??

It was really funny...and enjoyable listening to the Scottish commentators (one was clearly South African) because they were so biased it was hilarious. Talking about how good Scottish cricket is going, they have some world class stars, etc. Then they got SMASHED.

Still though hitting 300 at a run a ball is pretty impressive.

Kostas got back to back tons…and literally just turned 19. Sky is the limit for this kid.

Green also unlikely to be fit for India, might need surgery, that’s a massive blow.

So with Green likely out for India, what are you doing if you are selector? It isn’t just his all round abilities gone, it’s also batting at 4.

Really, you’ve got two options:
1. Bring in Hardie or Webster at 6 and put everyone else higher or somewhere different

2. Put Smith back at 4 and bring in an opener but the cupboard is pretty much not ideal there - Harris can’t perform at test level, Bancroft had a poor game and has obvious baggage, Konstas is too green and Renshaw might be mentally shot

if they’re not going to risk Konstas then I’d move someone else up to open and have Smith at 4. Bring in a debutant at six, probably Webster to reward his shield and county form, although Davies or Hardie would be fine if they want to have an eye to the future.

We already have an allrounder in Marsh, and if he can’t bowl then he shouldn’t be in the side given his fc and test record imo (I acknowledge he won’t be dropped and the selectors will pick him as a pure batsman regardless of form).

Webster probably should be rewarded but Hardie seems pretty reliable himself and I think his bowling is likely to be more dangerous than Websters. Green being out sucks, we'll miss his fielding too.

I'd love to see us go bold too but I don't think the selectors will. There will be a bit of a generational change but the question is when. Do you do it for India, the best side in the world? It would be a big call.

But if they did go bold, I'd love to see:
1. Konstas
2. Khawaja
3. Labushagne
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Hardie
7. Inglis
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

12. Davies

I reckon it’ll be something like:
1. Khawaja
2. Harris
3. Lab
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Marsh
7. Carey
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Lyon
11. Hazle

Basically as boring as possible filled with blokes who will either be retired or not in the team within the next 2-3 years. It’ll be great when we lose Smith, Usman, Starc, Hazle, Lyon (although he will probably play until his late 30s/ early 40s unless pushed by selectors) and will need to replace them with rookies with zero test experience before an away ashes series. Marsh and Harris also won’t be in the side or will be getting picked undeservedly: picking them now and sticking with them proves that the selectors aren’t looking further ahead than this series.

Getting someone like Webster in the team will give some test experience to a guy who is deserving of selection on form and has experience and runs on the board in England. However, going with Davies, Hardie, Konstas, or even Inglis as a batsman would be fine

I'd push Carey out in favour of Inglis personally but as I mentioned previously, Carey hasn't done enough wrong to be punted and that's fair enough. I just think Inglis is a class above Carey with both bat and gloves.

Did you know Carey dropped Konstas on 0 yesterday? His keeping continues to be poor.

McSweeney gets a fourth innings ton. Some very good performances this week for some of the next gen players.

He is a very good cricketer and IMO the best candidate to be the next Test Captain we have. He just needs to get in the team. Spewing he left QLD.

McSweeney with a 100 (*) in the second innings to start his shield season. Backing up a 56 in the first where he was dismissed by a run out. He is looking good this year, backing up a breakout year last year.

He is by far the best top-middle order batsman in the country for mine at the minute. Sadly for him not to much wiggle room in that department with Labs, Smith, Green and Head taking up those spots. 3-5 a spot opens up I’m playing him over anyone else though and if he can prove to be the best bat in shield I think if 6 was to open up as well you’d have to give it to him.

Clayton is second (top-middle) and I have McSweeney light years ahead at the minute.

Konstas, Whiteman, Harris, Handscomb, Silk, McSweeney, Clayton, Labuschagne, Marsh, Webster, Hope, McDermott, Connolly, Inglis and Carey have all started the season sublimely.

Davies with decent and aggressive starts in both innings to kick his season off in promising fashion without putting his name up in lights.

25 and under
1. Teague Wyllie
2. Sam Konstas
3. Nathan McSweeney
4. Jack Clayton
5. Aaron Hardie
6. Oliver Davies
7. Jake Fraser-McGurk (WK)
8. Cooper Connolly
9. Mitch Perry
10. Jordan Buckingham
11. Tanveer Sangha

Obviously few bowlers but I thought the batters are the flavour of the week today so may as well give it to them while you can.
