After seeing so many shocking video ref calls, I’m actually at the point where I’d prefer no video ref than to have them.

Having a ref or touchie make the odd wrong decision, even the 40/60 wrong calls is no where near as painful to stomach watching than an obvious decision be incorrectly called after watching super slomo from 30 different angles.

I honestly don’t think the onfield ref gets it wrong much more than the video ref with all the time and close ups in the world does.

I actually would prefer to just sack the whole system, let the onfield ref do their job, and just cop the bad calls.

I know there is probably a happier medium than the current system or zero ref, but I’m curious - if you had to choose between the current use the video ref or no video ref at all, which would you choose?

That challenge by Penrith on the weekend needs to be studied. Either Klown was watching a different game, or physics no longer means anything.

You say that, but there have been soo many obvious shockers that get instantly overturned due to clear knock ons, etc.

The issue, as always, is where do you draw the line on what is a "shocker"... the actual clear shockers are not the issues and are the ones that HAVE to be overturned by the vid ref.

It's when the ref is looking for minute things to overturn decisions.... only to flip around and not be as pedantic on other situations... even in the same game

There is no way that knock on that Klown overturned as a "clear and obvious" as they usually like to define for video refs... but Klown's clear and obvious for a panthers game differs to Kasey's clear and obvious in any moment of any game across a season.

I get it's fun to highlight the bad calls the bunker makes but let's be real here, if you all look at all the calls made over the course of a season, they get it right far more than they get it wrong. Unfortunately you're just not going to eliminate human error entirely.

I guarantee if the video ref was scrapped, there would be calls for it to be brought back very quickly. There's a reason it was brought in in the first place.

I'm all for scrapping the captains challenge, because it's being exploited anyway, and using the video ref for try scoring scenarios only, but it can't be scrapped now. Even in sin bin/send off scenarios, only the ref can make the call after watching a replay on the big screen, no recommendations from the bunker. No going back several players to pull up a bit of foul play because the bunker got in the ear of the ref and tipped them off. Try scoring scenarios only.

Yeah the captain's challenge is the one that needs to be scrapped completely or revamped.

They should only be able to challenge the exact part of the play in question and that should be the only thing the vid ref looks at.

And they should enforce their own ****ing rules and stop allowing teams to challenge for foul play (that gets reviewed by the bunker and if reportable penalised) and discretionary calls.

Last year wahs were able to put a challenge in for marker not square on a field goal attempt... again the bunker is allowed to do their own review on field goals... so a team should not be allowed to chuck a challenge in to be looking at discretionary calls.

That would at least stop captain's challenges so they just look at ****ing everything and if you get a Kasey in the bunker she'll find something she wants to overturn

Yep, get rid of it and let the officials do their jobs again. Its not as bad as VAR, but the bunker isnt far off.

Yeah, bringing back 2 refs would be the start of getting this bs ruck under control again imo.

Let the bunker just deal with try scoring stuff.

Bunker needs to stay - but let's go one better. "Captain's referral". At the press conference, the captain gets to refer one incident to Annersley and he is then made to justify the decision publicly the following week. The fans then get to vote, and if it's found the ref got it wrong, the captain gets to kick both that ref and Annersley in the nuts. Also publicly.

This may well become the most popular thing the NRL has ever done...so they will never do it.

Neither vote option is ideal. Why does the bunker need to have a different ref every game? Why can't the NRL find the best person at working the bunker, and have them do every game. The video ref is here to stay, and is a net positive to the game.

An that person should be Kev Walters

If you get rid of the video ref you will need to stop the broadcasters playing slow mo replays imo the outrage from those is what spawned the video ref initially

Nailed it bro .

Ideally that person shouldn't be watching the game, just turn their screen/s on when it's decision time and have the score and game clock removed.

I like this line of thought too. But again, let's go further, the footage gets AI'd to remove any distinguishing features of the players and jerseys.

And I'll go one step further than that - just get AI to ref the game.
