NEWS Gun Reynolds replacement Broncos want but 'can't afford'

Brisbane is starting to look at life after Adam Reynolds as the champion halfback nears the end of his NRL career.

The 2014 premiership winner is contracted for 2025 but is currently long odds to sign another deal in the NRL beyond that.

It means the Broncos need a new No.7 - and at the moment there is no answer staring the Red Hill club in the face.

Reynolds told Wide Wide of Sports during pre-season he thought Ezra Mam had the ability to transition into a quality halfback and potentially replace him in the jersey.

But coach Kevin Walters didn't put Mam in the No.7 jumper once in 2024, despite having the perfect opportunity when Reynolds spent nearly three months sidelined by injury.

Legendary five-eighth turned Broncos director Darren Lockyer admits Mam doesn't strike him as a natural halfback.

"Not in the short term," Lockyer told Wide World of Sports' QLDER.

"I think Ezra is very much a player that plays what's in front of him, he's not an organising player.

"I think (Panthers playmaker) Jarome Luai this year, when he had to go to seven he was really impressive. But he's got a few more years' experience under his belt (than Mam).

"I think Ezra maybe in the long term is an option, but in the short term no."

The inability of Mam to step up leaves Brisbane with a glaring issue heading into 2025.

There's been ongoing speculation the club will try to bring Sam Walker back to Queensland.

Walker, 22, is in the midst of contract negotiations with the Roosters but rumours suggest he will want as much as $1.5 million a season in the coming years. Kalyn Ponga is currently the NRL's highest earner and pockets about $1.4m a year from Newcastle.

Walker is the most promising young halfback in the league and is considered next in line to Daly Cherry-Evans' Queensland jumper.

And while the Broncos would no doubt love to bring him home, Lockyer concedes the club won't be able to.

"Sam's a quality player, and I feel like the Roosters without Sam can't win the premiership," Lockyer said.

"He's getting better with every year and every game of experience.

"The salary cap probably restricts you from bringing someone like that to the club at the moment, because he's demanding big money.

"He's already got a decent offer on the table from the Roosters, even though it's well below what he's asking.

"The Broncos at the moment would not be in the market, could not afford that type of player."

Reynolds' exit at the end of next year won't free up a lot of money given he accepted a significant pay cut to re-sign with the Broncos for 2025.

And with guns like Reece Walsh and Payne Haas already on big dollars, the club will find it tough to splash the cash on bringing another superstar into the fold any time soon.

Lockyer says the Reynolds succession plan will likely fall to a young gun who will still only be 19 next year.

"The spine long term, I think there's a couple of players there... there's a young kid called Coby Black coming through, he's been pretty impressive in Q Cup," Lockyer said.

"He will have another year under his belt while Adam's there, and he's learning from Adam.

"I think there's options there, but you don't replace Adam overnight. It will take time."

Sure but he played state of origin the year before he was a bronco and was playing first grade brl for ipswich prior to that which we're all sure your aware of.

The claim was he was a debuted at 18- he wasn't. He was playing for Norths Tigers in 1984.

He broke his leg in 84 and didn't make the Queensland 19 team. Didn't make Bennett's youth squad in 1985 either.

OK then riddle me this ?
How did he get the Qld job over Laurie Spina ? Langer got out played by Spina in the possibles / probables match at Lang Park .

Lachlan Ilias seems to be the forgotten man in all of this. I remember him being told he was free to negotiate with other clubs but haven't heard anything since. Not sure I could handle having a player managed by Anasta at the club though...while he hosts 360 anyway.

Relevance your honour?

That was 1987- three years later when he was 21 and it wasn't possibles v probables it was Queensland Residents v Sydney Queensland. Sydney won 20-10.

He did get outplayed, don't think anyone that saw the game would debate otherwise. He went better on the NZ tour a few weeks later and played both games with Wally- Queensland won both games on the tour came back and won the Origin.

Is he likely to be fit next year up front?

I'm still waiting to hear what weaknesses of the Broncos that Sam Walker fixes.

Do people just want him from the name alone or what? Please explain why anyone would want Sam Walker in the current Broncos team.
If he was coming here to play #7 with Ezra Mam #6, it wouldn’t be optimal imo..

Walker wouldn't fix anything. Him and Mam are the same type of player.

Walker's biggest asset is his skill-set and his willingness to use it. There's few halves in the modern game that possess the confidence Walker has and he's a bigger threat with the football than Reynolds is.

You'd pick him every day of the week over the current replacements at the club and with little else on the market he shapes as the best option.

I think it's a pipedream and can understand the hesitancy. Personally I enjoy watching him play, but understand that he has shortcomings and when it comes to the Maroons selections, I completely supported the selectors on Dearden > Walker. I also take the point that with Mam there, the Broncos have already made that commitment and need to maximise his game, even if he appears to be far more limited than Walker.

Mam is a great support player, but he struggles to initiate. There were a few times this year where he had options and instead of taking the three on offer he'd just self destruct.

Seems like we will probably go for a stop gap solution post Reyno, waiting on Blacks Development on what to do next.

The massive lack of good Halves and the overpriced money they demand basically forces this it seems, paying north of 1 Mil for Walker at this stage is just madness he at least needs to be playing Origin to come close to justifying that imo.

And with us having big money players in plenty of other positions It doesn't look like we will ever be in the market for a Quality 7 signing it will have to come from within.

Yeah, Bennett in an interview said Spina outplayed him and felt Spina and Kevin Walters were the better choices initially. It was the big push from Tommy and a few others that saw them go with Langer in the end for Origin.

Sexton is exactly what we need, no idea how much he will go for though. Whatever it is, it won't be anywhere near the ridiculous amount Walker will go for.

Thanks for adding that .
I became a huge Alf fan later . But couldn`t understand how he got the nod if that game was a selection trial .

A lot of people didn't including his team mates even after the side was named. Bob Linder publically said he didn't want Langer in the side and funnily enough they were made room mates so they would have to deal with it.

Nice documentary here about it

I don't really think it's realistic tbh, Dogs will probably be in position to offer him more money and a more secure future than we can given we have a highly rated 7 coming through.

It would be big if we could get him for that role but I can see it from his perspective being a bad move unless he has the confidence to win that battle no matter what, we definitely have the better squad on paper though so the upsides are potentially more even if dogs have the more stable coaching situation.

We are probably going to have to look to England or backup halves from other teams at this stage.
