I don't think the manufacturers claim it stops any head knock from hurting or causing concussion. I think it's purely to reduce the likelihood of a serious head injury or concussion from a direct head knock.

that and stopping you from splitting your head open or getting nasty gash.

thanks, i think what you say would be a very pracitcal reason for it as a lot of league players seem to get head cuts.
