A heart to heart with former teammate Brad Fittler was enough to convince 2009 Cowboy Shannon Hegarty that enough was enough.

After a glittering 11-year career in the NRL the Queensland and Australian representative decided to hang up his boots at the close of last season after accomplishing everything he had set out to achieve in the sport.

Uh oh, here come the tributes from the Hegarty lovers! LOLZ

What a champion! One of the true greats of our game and an absolute gentlemen.
Wish you all the best Hegarty you've done yourself, your family and your fans proud.

The man was poetry in motion. He would make 300m on every kick return (going back to give the opposition another go). He could carry 15 men over the line but if he was tired of that he could just jump 5 meters into the air over their heads. Surely he will be the next immortal.

HEG HAIL! HEG HAIL!

OMG OMG.... I'll be in the corner in the fetal postion.....:(

lol. Still remember when he motioned to us BHQ people with a slice across the throat. Useless ****, **** off and never come back.

Out of those 11 years, he was probably good for maybe 1 or 2, OK for another couple, and shit for the rest

EXCLUSIVE: Fittler's advice to Hegarty.

"Mate, retiring is probably a good idea. You weren't as good a player as me. Just be aware, if the Roosters ask you to coach them when Brian Smith has a heart attack after 10 rounds next year, don't do it.

But if you do take on the job, whatever you do, don't set a zero tolerance alcohol policy and then get on the turps while on away trips. It's bad news.

Also, make sure you have a game plan that isn't simply hit up for 5 and give it to Mitch to put up a bomb.
And don't try playing an overrated lock-playing-five-eighth at fullback. It's doomed for failure."
