Hull KR have set their sights on a new hooker for 2023 with Matt Parcell set to return to the NRL. Rugby League Live understands the Australian livewire is close to securing a return to his homeland with both Redcliffe Dolphins and Brisbane Broncos thought to be chasing his signature.
Though a deal is not yet finalised and Rovers remain hopeful of tying down a deal, sources claim there is an acceptance that Parcell is likely to leave the club at the end of the season and the club are now planning accordingly to find a replacement. Parcell, 29, arrived in Super League with Leeds Rhinos in 2017 and made the move to Rovers initially in a loan deal near the end of the 2019 season.
That move was made permanent at the end of that season and he has proven to be an astute signing for the club since his arrival.
His form this year has been particularly impressive and was named man of the match in the club's Challenge Cup quarter-final victory over Castleford Tigers.
But his days at the club now appear to be numbered. Rovers are now in the market for a new hooker with May 1st looming. With Parcell taking up an overseas player spot, they can look either abroad or closer to home for a replacement. Agents are beginning to shop players around to clubs and Rovers will no doubt be building a shortlist to work from.
It remains to be seen how big this year's recruitment drive will be. There are 16 players, basically half the squad, off-contract at the end of the season including senior players such as Dean Hadley, Elliot Minchella, Albert Vete, Korbin Sims, Brad Takairangi, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Kane Linnett.
Rovers potentially will not only have considerable cap space but a number of quota spots too, depending on who stays and who goes.
