Brisbane strike weapon Justin Hodges is certain to miss the opening rounds of 2014 as he recovers from an Achilles tendon tear suffered in round 22. A Broncos spokesperson says it looks like Hodges won't return to the field before round four. Centre Jack Reed had a shoulder operation which prevented him from joining England in the World Cup and while he will not take part in full contact sessions, he will start the pre-season. Corey Oates had a wrist operation; Mitchell Dodds a knee, David Hala a shoulder and Dale Copley a knee but all men will be available for the pre-season. Finally prized recruit Ben Barba has started walking after an ankle operation for an injury which occurred at the end of last season. He is aiming to begin running after Christmas with a goal of featuring in the Auckland Nines tournament.

You know, this will be one of those times where I wouldn't mind Hodges missing out in the early rounds. Extra spot in the back line to trial another player, possibly even Yow Yeh as a centre. Unless Griffin chucks Glenn there or something, then it'll just be a waste.

TBH with the options available Alec, I couldn't see Glenn or Stagg there unless we get a bad run of injuries leading upto the trials and round 1. Reed is the certainty in the centres, then you got Oates, Copley, Vidot, Yow Yeh(assuming his ready), Hoffman, Kahu, Mills, Drew before u even have to look at Maranta.

I think that gives us enough options for the trials to go with different centre/wing combinations to see what to go with for round 1.

i agree with this. and i think a big part of the reason we signed Mills and Vidot, was to prevent us having to play back rowers in the centers. especially since we get back Copley and possibly Yow Yeh

Sounds promising.

Hopefully the backline we trial in the first pre-season game is Barba, Hoffman, Reed, Yow Yeh, Kahu/Vidot

Did we sign Copley yet? I thought he was still off contract.

Yeah he is off contract though I haven't heard anything that even suggests he won't be here.

I'm hoping Corey Oates gets a shot in the centres........

I'd play him on the wing if it kept Maranta from there, but yes I'd like to see him in the centres and in the backrow in the trials.

Probably be second trial as first normally is the second string getting a run followed by two more serious trials but I like your thinking

I would put in Kahu first, as he is more likely to go down to injury again than Vidot is to suffer a fresh one. If/when Kahu is injured or isn't performing on form, call Vidot up.

There is absolutely no reason to play Gillet/Glenn in the centres or see Maranta play for the Broncos again with the depth signings we've just made.

Add another couple of rounds to Hodges return date, although I imagine he'll want to get as much match fitness as possible before Origin rolls around.

Id choose vidot over Kahu any day of the week.

Kahu has potential, he just hasn't had a good opportunity to show it because he went down to injury so much. I would give him the first 4 rounds then if he isn't performing, send him packing.

We can't have vidot playing q cup though he will have to be coming from the bench if he isn't given a starting spot.

why not ... Vidot is not a signing that demands automatic selection (like Barba). if he performs during the trials fine, but if not then he needs to perform well enough in the QLD cup to demand selection in the top grade. He was clearly bought cheaply as a depth signing.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be given a shot in the top grade, but it is up to him to demand selection through performances and i expect him to get his chance during the trials.

What's with Yow Yeh's name getting thrown about? I didn't see his name in the article. Has he been declared fit?

He started pre season training early with some of the younger boys mate, he's confident he'll be right for round 1. See how he goes
