IT’S being reported that a number of clubs have been informed that the NRL is investigating their players over alleged bets on rugby league games.

The Australian is reporting that the NRL integrity unit has launched an investigation into players betting on matches.
Under the NRL’s code of conduct players are banned from betting on games regardless of whether it involves their team or not.

After the Ryan Tandy saga, are they really that stupid? It doesn't matter if it's a part of $5 8-leg multi spread over different sports or $10,000 on their own team to win, it's opening the players up to the potential of corruption. If they end up in debt to the wrong person, they could in serious shit. All these exotic bets are ripe to be exploited.

FMD I hope I don't lose a certain half from my SVRL team.

Agree they are dumb as a box of rocks if they thought they could get away with it. The last line of the story alludes to teams in contention for finals spots being affected, this could get nasty.

Exotic bets should be illegal.

If players are caught, just ban them. Not this BS tell them off and hope they don't do it again. Start making a stand against these fucking drop kicks that play this game.

Agreed, exotic bets only take one player to rort.

Imagine if it is him involved. Surely the last straw if it were the case

Yeah mate, it would be a real shame too, I love watching him when he is on. He is one of a few players who play what's in front of him.

Ahhh so this the big Brent Read scoop that was mentioned yesterday. Interesting, its a real shame this this betting/gambling drama has reared its head again. These exotic bets have really played havoc with sports worldwide, from the spot match fixing in cricket to this in league. Harsher penalties and it seems more education is needed.

I actually doubt that very much. This seems to just be small bets and players betting on the sport in a direct way, rather than anything in terms of spot fixing.

I think if the players are investigated, the refs should be as well.

And I think it is the halfback you are thinking it is. (hope we are thinking the same player)

At least Ryan Tandy won't be the scapegoat this time. I wonder who the NRL will throw under the bus this time.

It's bets on what sort of points will be scored eg: After a penalty or whatever happens, instead of going for a try, they go for a goal etc.

true, but exotic markets are also subject to extremely low betting limits at Australian books and they're always the markets that set alarm bells ringing if anything semi substantial is wagered on them ... So if you're a player happy to be in on a fix, you're not going to make anything more than chump change rorting an exotic market.

UP to 25 officials and players across the NRL, including those employed and registered by at least two Sydney clubs, have been caught betting on matches by the NRL Integrity Unit.
Following a two-month investigation, the NRL’s Integrity Unit is close to determining their findings after auditing the betting records of registered players and officials from the NRL, NSW Cup and under-20s Holden Cup competition.
Over the past two months, the NRL has uncovered as many as 25 officials and players combined who have been gambling on games. However, the NRL declared, via a media statement yesterday, that the wagers were in no way aligned to match-fixing.

Players and officials but it doesn't seem like they are saying this is as bad it was made out initially. Geez.

It's good that it's been announced when the findings are almost complete.

I don't care about the circumstances. I don't care if it's as simple as a player might have known that player X would be out for another team so thought the odds were there to take advantage of. The rules are clear.
