COACH Ivan Henjak believes Israel Folau is poised to rebound from a disappointing first season with Brisbane and could challenge the likes of Greg Inglis and Jarryd Hayne as rugby league's best.

Melbourne juggernaut Inglis ended 2009 crowned the world player of the year in addition to tasting premiership, State of Origin and Four Nations glory. And Hayne established himself as the game's most exciting talent before securing a new four-year $2 million deal with Parramatta.

However for fellow young backline star Folau, things did not go to plan, as the giant 20-year-old struggled with the first serious injury of his career when he fractured his ankle against the Warriors in July.

With Brisbane under the pump, Folau pushed himself to make a comeback against North Queensland just before the finals, but he wasn't the intimidating 105kg force he'd been before hurting himself. "He had the first major injury of his career and that knocked him about,'' said Henjak.

"He probably shouldn't have come back when he did, I'm not sure it (fracture) was healed properly and he struggled few those last few games. I still thought he did quite well. Don't forget we played him on the left side later in the year which was really difficult for him.

"There were some reasons why he wasn't the player we saw in Melbourne but we haven't seen the best of him yet for sure. He's not 21 yet.''

Henjak is excited about the physical changes he has seen in Folau who's been in full pre-season training while the rest of the Broncos stars enjoy an extended break over Christmas.

"He certainly looks like he's physically matured a bit more,'' said the coach. "He's big enough as it it, but I can see him starting to physically mature, especially up top. (Fitness director) Dean (Benton) thinks he's got him a little bit quicker or that he can get him a little quicker, which is exciting.

"This will be Izzy's fourth season (in the NRL) and it's time .... if he hasn't made his mark, he's certainly about to.''

Henjak stressed the high-leaping 105kg Folau was a different player to the explosive Inglis and the dynamic Hayne. But all were wonderful athletes who excited fans because of their size, power and skill.

"Izzy brings it in a different way to Greg,'' he said. But he could well have the same kind of impact that Greg Inglis has had on rugby league.''

All Izzy really needs is speed, everytime he makes a break he gets hunted down quite quickly, being only 20 im sure its a real possibilty.

What do you do when Israel Folau comes through your window?

Swim.

Personally, i don't think Izzys year was disappointing, he scored something like 17 tries and was also out for about 7-8 games as well (top try scorer was about 24), then he moved to the opposite side of the field that he has been playing all his career.

Disappointing compared to the standard he set in his first couple of seasons.

I don't think he can be as damaging as Inglis or Hayne, but if he's the next best thing thing and consistent all the way then I'll still be very happy. :D

He will be more consistant then Hayne for sure

He's better than Hayne. Hayne is inconsistent, Inglis on the other hand is way better, he's a bloody freak, I wish he was in our team.

Agreed.

Also currently Inglis and Hayne are far more mature footballers than Izzy as well. Izzy is still raw in football smarts IMO and I think that is perfectly fine.

Izzy is a typical example of a player that is over-hyped too early in his career. He's showed glimpses of being brilliant, but his game is very one dimensional in my opinion. I could see him being a great player, but on the other hand it would also not surprise me if he just fades away to a nobody. Jury is still out.

+1.

To be honest, apart from his phenomenal ability under the high ball, he's got little else to his game at this stage. But as Henjak says, he's still young, plenty of time to add more dimensions to his game.

Are you kidding me? Hayne is twice the player Izzy is.
When he's in form, the first 2/3 of this year he did absolutely nothing.

perhaps that was because he was playing 5/8?

Izzy IMO will go down as one of the better finishers in history. He'll go pretty close to 200 first grade trys if you ask me.

He is limited to being a finisher, and there is nothing wrong with that. He is a damn good one and genetics have given him an advantage. His vertical leap, size and power close to the line are all valuable attributes and will lead to him scoring many, many tries. Just don't ask him to set one up.

Being at a team with Legends like Langer and Lockyer, Give it time and i wouldnt be to suprised to see Izzy starting to set a couple up. Will never be a Lockyer or Smith but he still has room to grow.

possibly yeah, and Izzy did start the year very well. Injuries are a bitch.

2010 will be

Izzy/Winter VS Hodges/YowYeh

wanna place bets on what side will score more?... given that they play those sides still
