James Ackerman

Jesus Christ, I didn't realize it was Molo involved.

What a tragedy for the Broncos and Rugby League at large. Wayne just can't seem to escape these tragic events that seem to follow him from club to club. I hope we dedicate Friday nights game to him.

Echoing everyone's feelings for the family and friends of James Ackerman, as well as Francis Molo, who will undoubtedly be in a very fragile state of mind.

RIP

A moments silence was observed at the Dragons Roosters match tonight and you could hear a pin drop. Tremendous respect to the fans.

Does anyone know if it was a high tackle or a lifting tackle...

The charge sheet will be out today.

I won't speculate until I've seen footage and know the charge. It wasn't lifting though I know that.

Possible shoulder charge from what I'm hearing and reading from both people who were there, and weren't.

Anthony Griffin: Ackers was a great bloke

I was going to write something else today about the game but can't get past the tragic death of James Ackerman (Ackers). For those who haven't heard as yet he suffered a head injury last Saturday playing for Sunshine Coast in the QLD CUP and passed away on Monday.

In 2009 Ackers was part of the Broncos U/20 team of which I was coach. The makeup of the Broncos 20s has always been dominated by the boys who are already in the academies' or are identified as elite 17-18 year old players not already at the club.
To supplement this group and build the squad we would then go to our affiliate Clubs and pick up some of their best young players. James was playing at the Redcliffe Dolphins in their 20s and had been recommended as someone who would be worth while picking up.

We did some homework and I gave him a call and asked if he could come in and see me. James and his father Michael came into Red Hill and after a short meeting they accepted a contract to play for the Broncos.

Ackers was quiet during our meeting and his Dad was cautious in his questions. You get to do a lot of those meetings when you are recruiting young men and each one is a little different. Leaving that meeting after shaking their hands Igot the feeling that this boy and his Dad wouldn't require much maintenance. That feeling turned out to be right.
James was a great team man. He was a backrower who played mainly in the middle. He wasn't the biggest forward and wasn't blessed with footwork or speed but the reason he had ended up where he did that year was that he was tough and reliable.

That was the recommendation and that's what we got. He was a coach's dream. A guy with a hard edge about him with a great attitude. He wasn't a regular starter, playing 15 games, but went on to play 23 in 2010. His teammates liked playing with him because they knew he wouldn't let them down.
It can take a bit of time for the boys to get used to the demands of training and playing in the National under 20s competition. Ackers never missed a beat though. The only time I can remember having to have a quiet chat about his discipline was when he was late to a team meeting in Sydney because there was a TAB over the road from our hotel.
I wasn't too bothered though because he was a player who got his job done on game day.
2009 was the only year we worked together. He moved into the Queensland Cup after finishing at the Broncos in 2010.
Every now and then I would see him play or read his name in the program. Over the years you lose contact with players but you always have a respect and care for them.
I read where he was one of the leaders of the Sunshine Coast team and someone that everybody looked up to. They are some of my memories' as well.
Sport is not meant to be like this. His family have lost a son, husband, father and brother in the most unexplainable way. Please help and support them if you can. Ackers was a great bloke.

FRANK Molo has been assured he has a future at the Broncos as he prepares to undergo more counselling over the death of Sunshine Coast player James Ackerman.

The Titans last week offered a lucrative two-year deal to Molo but the Broncos are doing everything possible to ensure the rookie prop is catered for on and off the field.

It is a testing time on several fronts for Molo, who has been trying to sort out his NRL future. He is currently off contract at the Broncos, who discussed a one-year extension days before Molo faced Sunshine Coast at Bishop Park on Saturday night.

The Titans have had Molo on their radar for some time but the Broncos are keen to retain him and help the Aspley Devils junior through the toughest ordeal of his life.

QRL Statement: Re Francis Molo
The QRL Judiciary panel met to receive submissions and medical reports which indicated the player was at this stage not fit to either appear before the judiciary or play the game of rugby league.
Accordingly, proceedings have been adjourned.
A review of evidence and submissions upon the resumption of proceedings may determine what or if any charges/grading will arise.
No further comments will be made in relation to this matter at this point in time.

if say, theoretically, Molo did perform a shoulder charge which did go wrong and directly caused ackermans death, considering it's outlawed in the game, could legal action follow if the ackermanns wanted?
