BRONCOS’ Assistant Coach Steve Kearney has employed some of his New Zealand Test squad to help Brisbane prepare for Sunday’s NRL Grand Final.
The Broncos had their first session in Sydney today, with captain Justin Hodges on light duties because of a minor back injury suffered last week.
Ten Kiwi Test players including Martin Taupau, ex-Bronco Gerard Beale, Peta Hiku and Jason Nightingale ran in an opposed session against Brisbane today.
With the Broncos’ full training squad not coming down to Sydney until later in the week, the Kiwi presence was a big help, said Kearney.
“Normally we have all our guys that are playing Queensland Cup at training,” he said.
“They will come down tomorrow and be part of training on Saturday.
“But it was about getting some bodies here, and I thought I’d get some good looking bodies here like Marty Tapau and Gerard Beale.
“It worked out well.”
Kearney said the Broncos players that had limited training were just precautionary measures for the final – and biggest – match of the year.
The Broncos expect Hodges to be fine for Sunday’s decider.
“’Hodgo’ obviously had a tight back from last week,” said Kearney.
“Mitchell Dodds has been on limited duties but it is all about making sure we are getting them right for the important day, which is Sunday.
“The focus for us is Sunday, so they did what they needed to do and we pulled them out.”
The Broncos have a public appearance at NRL Nation at Darling Harbour this afternoon, before appearing on The NRL Footy Show tonight.

I have to say. brilliant idea. Get the Kiwis in to begin warming them up for the Test matches while Brisbane get some quality opposition for their training for the GF.

GG Kearney.

I wouldn't have Beale anywhere near our side after the last time he fucked up our premiership hopes.

Yeah, I would get him the **** out.

Beale is a Kiwi? I thought he was French? Harry Sack

Funny since the throat slit how chummy Taupau and Thaiday have become.

What happens on the field, stays on the field. They're both experienced enough to know this unwritten law.

Hopefully Tapau gets a taste for life with Kearney and Bennett and moves north to join Blair.

Love to have him but I imagine the price tag would be quite scary.

Yep, plus we still have Gavet yet to really show what he can do.

Hopefully he bounces back. He's had a long window to rehab his injuries, should be ripe for a strong pre season.

We've done pretty well with what we've got this year, but if we could get him and another prop to step up as genuine, line bending, mad dog brutes, I'd be stoked. It's the one thing we're lacking currently.

Don't think we can manage McGuire, Blair and Tapau in one squad. none of those guys wants to run off the bench.

Disagree Rally. McGuire, Blair, Gavet and Wallace - that's a pretty solid starting/bench front line. Offa coming through. Thaiday can step up as well. I think we're good with what we have.

Was thinking this morning of how Kearney will be benefitting from having Bennett as his head coach at the Broncos, instead of just a couple of weeks of Wayne sticking his nose in. It's awesome thinking that for 11 months Bennett is the man, with Kearney doing what he's told (and learning from WB), then it's international footy time and Bennett goes "here's the keys, let me know how I can help".

Ray Warren looking at NZ team photo. "look fat, I can see Sam Thaiday is back in the side"

HAHAHA. Nice.

Congrats to Kodi, Alex, Jordy and captain Adam Blair on their selections! I'll definitely be cheering on New Zealand.
