THE EX Kevin Walters

‘Not how a rugby league team should run’: Former Broncos staffer’s insight into Kevvie’s culture

Mark ‘Chopper’ Burgess, joined Bill McDonald on 4BC Mornings to discuss how the Broncos culture under Kevin Walters is very different compared to when Wayne Bennett was in charge.
Burgess said under Kevvie’s leadership there were too many coaches, with almost a specific coach for every player and their gym looked more like a hairdressing salon. He said Kevin Walters’ coaching style was very much ‘his way or the highway’ and that you cannot compare him to Wayne Bennett, Michael Maguire or Craig Bellamy.

Thoughts?
Fucking hell, that was brutal. Refreshingly brutal.

If that's a legit take - and it scans to me - Kevvie has to go, the sooner the better.

I don't get how we can go from the spoon to a grand final under this system.
, which everyone seemed fine with, then be so heavily scrutinised when we have a less than ideal season.
Everyone is aware this season was decimated by injury right? We lost Reynolds to a blown bicep, Walsh to multiple head knocks and a busted hand, Haas to a foot injury, Cobbo and Arthur's as well as Maam at different stages of the season.
Up until last round with the Roosters injury toll, I'm pretty sure we were the team who copped it the worst through injury, losing a whole slew of our key players.
Not to mention the origin window.
Basically the polar opposite of the previous season.

Take any team in the comp and remove their spine and best forwards and they will end up the same as us.
But hey, let's all blame the coach.
Did you even listen to Chopper?

In case you missed it, he said Kev has to go.

If Madge came in, I have no doubt about 70% of this squad would run. There is no way a lot of them would be able to deal with the coaching style Madge has. Let’s just say there would be a lot less instagram posts.
Seems exactly what we need, bring him in I say.

Kev isn’t the one out there last night throwing arms out in tackles and letting small guys just walk through. I refuse to believe any coach would be stupid enough to have a team coached to do any of those things.

Sorry Sprojy ☺️

I don't get the "there's nothing out there right now" argument.

Just think that nothing is more important to you than getting a basketball into the basket. Every time you try, you come up way too short. You can't find a step ladder or a trampoline, but why waste your time doing the same thing that isn't working when you can try a different technique?

There are young coaches out there wanting a chance. We're wasting our time just doing the same thing that's failing.

Not sure if you've realised but the game has changed a fair bit since Alfie was chip and chasing, and Kevvie was retiring at the turn of the millennium.

Reynolds is currently having to spend time preparing himself for the weekend and not entirely on coaching the halves... but he's played his entire career in the current modern league that has formed since the mid-00's (wrestling, split halves, etc.).

I cant recall any former one club Broncos being a successful coach anywhere... I'm probably missing an obvious one, but Lockyer, Wally, Thorn, Kevvie, Alfie, etc. have been unable to pass on their knowledge despite being amazing players.. compare that to a nobody player like Matt Johns that created his media career basically off the back of being a specialist halves coach for hire.

Maybe that suggests that Broncos over the generations have been mostly playing heads up footy, not a lot of structure and Bennett's super basic one out hitups, but relying on bend not break defence and star individuals to get them home.

As a club they've basically refused to adapt to the modern game and continue to live off archaic ideals of "what" the club should be... coach has to be Qld, cant have NSW players, etc. and the game is leaving them in the dust.

Reynolds is like the first footy minded player that the club can actually utilise after he retires and instead they're allowing the public and the media to push him out of the club.
That's an interesting point about coaches, but it isn't a problem limited to the Broncos, Rugby League or sport in general. In fact, there have only been a few superstars in Australian sport that have been both star players and star coaches I can think of. Leigh Mathews, John Worsfold and Ron Barassi in the AFL, and possibly Justin Langer (And even then, Justin Langer lost the dressing room)

Well so be it.

Time for Madge to arrive.

I will supply the broom to sweep them out.

He's less qualified than Kev.
That ain't true. He's followed Bennett much like Darius. Bennett likes to oversee and leave the details to his unders. Bennett always wanted JD for us.

I just think that like Siebold, you learn a lot from your mistakes. I'm not asking him to be head coach, but coaching, he certainly can do. He would be an excellent addition to the team.

Pretty sure many on here have always questioned his coaching ability and mentioned the importance of getting good, quality assistants around him. Teo and Barrett ain't it.

If, by all appearances, something happened within the playing group and Kev hasn't been able to bring them together... Ok so he's not a technically great coach, but he's a culture/man-manager...but he can't get the players back on the same page either? So his strength is not even that...

So what DOES he offer then, other than being an old boy?

Speaking to a few people i know who have been coached by him, purely as a coach concentrating on one aspect of a team, they speak very highly of him. As a head coach, he's got the Seibold issue, he cant get his ideas across in an easy to understand manner. Could well be why we play well with so little structure and play so chaotic at times.

Sounds like a great assistant coach to me.

Is this Walshy backing the coach by sharing what Billy said?

Wont be only the players who run if Madge comes in.
Not sure how a lot of QLD/Broncos fans would feel about it.

It may work, it may not, but it would most certainly be interesting.

I know Walker is the dream and understandable too, we’d all love to get him but he’s more flash and expensive flash. We already have that in Mam and hopefully Walsh if he re-signs. Mozer and Sexton would provide the steady hand we need and would not cost anywhere near as much. It’s the kind of astute signing our club has not been making since Ikin left.

Except Walker has no long kicking game, is a speedbump in defense and completely not what we need from a 7.
