FORMER Broncos captain Justin Hodges believes the respect senior players have for Kodi Nikorima will be a key asset as he plays for his future at the Broncos.

Half Nikorima is being assessed for a new contract during Ben Hunt’s six week absence through injury as Brisbane prepare to fill the huge void left by Hunt’s departure to the Dragons next season.

Hodges has seen Nikorima, a New Zealand born, Wavell High School product, rise through the ranks at the Broncos after being signed by the club six years ago and senses the 23-year-old has the potential to seal the deal.

“I think he has a great future,’’ Hodges said.

“He is fast and he good footwork. Has a lot of brains about him as well. And he can play to a game plan. He is actually pretty confident for a young kid.

“He doesn’t mind telling people what to do but the flip side of that is he has the respect of the senior players and that helps him. He gets on good with everyone so he can tell people where to go.

“He can run a game but it is not just him. There is Darius Boyd and Andrew McCullough there as well to help with that stuff.

“You just have to give him more time with the ball.

“I would like to see him do it. He has been in the system for a long time and comes from a great family. This is his chance.

“Time will be telling for him for he has six weeks to prove himself. Jack Bird has signed up but I don’t see him playing halfback. The position is still up for grabs.

Bird, recruited from the Sharks, effectively filled the contract space left by Hunt’s vacancy but he is unlikely to fill Hunt’s role in the team.

It would be a great result for Brisbane if Nikorima could rise to the challenge of giving Brisbane a permanent number seven.

“We saw on the weekend he is playing good footy,’’ Hodges said of Nikorima.

“He has the potential to make the position his own. He has several very good dimensions to his game.

“He needs to get guys to where they need to go and get the ball to guys like Milford and Boyd. I think he is most dangerous with his support play in second phase.

“You get Adam Blair and Korbin Sims and blokes like that who he can feed off.’’
