Locky Statue?

Just came across this blog about a statue of Lockyer at the southern end of Lang Park once he retires.

Love the idea, but I agree with mrslong - definitely need one for Alfie too. Our two best players, most successful captains, and both totally loyal to the club they obviously love. You can't split them in terms of service to the Broncos.

Im actually going to say no to a Lockyer statue. I think the King statue is enough. I think we should take a lead from American sports and hang up "Jerseys" and "Pennants" around the Stadium, showing our hall of fame players, as well as pennants saying "2006 Premiers" and stuff like that.

The problem with statues and other paraphenalia here is that we aren't the only ones who use it as a home ground. At ANZ they had stands named after players and they had the premierships and Hall of Fame players listed on stadium signage. When we moved back to Lang Park, I made enquiries as to why the stands didn't continue to be be named after thep players or have the premiership and hall of fame signage around. I was told that it was because Rugby League is not the only tennant and other sports would want their players/information etc on the stadium signage instead of RL things when they were playing there. It is too hard to have permanent signage to meet the needs of all the sports that use the ground and it really would be quite a lot of work to be changing them over all the time (especially with short turn-arounds between games from different sports some weekends). Which is all why, as much as I support it, I don't think a Locky (or anyone else) Statue at Lang Park will happen. The Wally one was already there before Lang Park was redeveloped and Union and Soccer moved in as co-tennants, they couldn't really take it away.

The difference with the US teams is their home ground is just THEIR home ground - they don't share them with other sports. And usually the club actually owns their venue (whereas we rent the venue from the Qld Govt), so they can pretty much do whatever they want to it.

I still think that Ron McAuliffe should have something permanent at Lang Park named in his honour. I know Queensland award the Ron McAuliffe medal for their player of the series, but I think something at Lang Park needs to indicate how much influence he had in Queensland Rugby League. I suppose with Suncorp Stadium sort of being one big "grandstand" they can't name the Eastern Grandstand after him again, but IMO he deserves SOMETHING!!
