NEWS Lord Vlandys Speaks

I agree with his sentiment, it's just that, while we were on top it wasn't fair, we had too many advantages and needed to be crippled in order for shit teams to compete. Now that Sydney darling teams and those important to the NRL strategically (Titans & Storm) are on top, their success needs to be rewarded and other teams just need to Git Gud.

It's also blatantly obvious that we are being artificially held down in order to vindicate the upcoming New Brisbane. I actually don't think the rule changes have done it, moreso that the rule changes have allowed ruthless and arbitrary control of the rucks, of momentum, by the refs are we are being deliberately stifled. While other teams are carried via selective "10 metre" distances and other protections to give them time and space. We are also dogged routinely by the judiciary, our players unfairly scrutinised while the media sets the rhetoric, like TPJ being an out-of-control grub, while JWH is lauded as an "enforcer" who is allowed to get away cheap shots and dog acts that would land most of us up with assault charges.

AND THEN our rivals are actively enabled by the NRL to poach our best players by unprecedented salary cap manipulation.

At this point I don't think the NRL are concerned about dwindling Brisbane fans or TV viewership. In fact they are counting on it, it's what they are actively working towards, to have as many people as possible ready to jump on Brisbane II when it is inevitably introduced.

I don't see things getting any better for at least a couple of years after B2 has been introduced and the artificial fanfare has cooled down.

I don't believe that Smokin Joe was referring to this specifically, but yeah, shit's going to get a lot worse before we can hope to be allowed to compete on even terms again.
I agree with all you say except for the refs being told to artificially prop up teams. I have ref connections and there’s no way they aren’t going out and trying their best. The goal posts keeps
being moved on them too. 1 ref, 2 refs, rule changes etc...

I think the corruption is much higher up the chain, with favours granted for certain teams and not others. And it’s more a favour for the boys mentality then anything really nefarious. They don’t need us to fail to bring in a 2nd team. That’s biting off their nose to spite their face.

Not buying any of this "NRL has fucked us over" dribble. We, and all the other shit clubs have done that to ourselves. In our case, the heart and soul of the club has been ripped out by White and Seibold. We need to get our house in order and it starts with the front office. Hopefully this Dave D is as good as he is made out to be. We need to be smarter on and off the field.
Bennett takes blame too.

If he wants clubs to sort themselves out, they need to get serious about stopping other clubs offering huge money to other teams unproven kids. How can you develop a player in that sort of climate.

If Vlandys really does see it as a survival of the fittest, then fucking get rid of the salary cap.

Serious question - how have Penrith managed it then?

I'm guessing it's a combination of good management, the size of their nursery and luck.

Not sure really. Its not been an overnight thing for them though. They seem to have had a group come through together and they have a bond that they are willing to stay for. They also integrated them with players like Tamou, Mansour, Grant, Maloney and Merrin over the years, plus some astute signings like Capewell, Korisau, Kikau and Eisenhuth.

Matt Burton is a good example of a top quality kid coming through who they just didnt really bother fighting to keep in a lot of ways because they already have 2 young, quality options there. Luai is also a good example of a player who had to bide his time in ISC until Maloney left. They let him develop. We havent been operating like that.

Gus and Jones turned that around.

Penrith lost their way, when Gus took over they had 5/25 locals in their top 25 and Gus turned it into 24/30. They were completely ignoring their greatest resource.

Jones has been the recruitment man at Penrith since 1990.

Penrith are riding the crest of a wave at the moment. Once they start losing a few, then a few more, a bit more pressure, maybe they don’t stay together for that little bit less cash. Give it time. Nobody stays on top for ever.

They do have a massive nursery, but look what happens when you have a bunch of guys coming through the grades together. Most of our guys played together or against each other in high school and junior reps, but imagine the team we could have if they spent a year or two in QCup together. Now our current state of things hasn't allowed that because all we have is the kids, but my point still stands.

We need our own reserve grade side, we need to actually utilise our resources and be hands-on with these kids rather than buckshotting the entire state and hoping we hit something and then spreading them amongst the few QCup sides we have agreements with.

Give them a clear path, make them an actual part of the club early so they don't see us as just a stepping stone to a huge contract elsewhere.

Yep, we were better when we used the Clydesdale’s exclusively. But the QCup mob got their noses out of joint about the strength of the comp blah blah blah.

Toowoomba couldn’t come up with their share to fund a team and Broncos moved on with their half. Aspley became the Broncos team.

Clydesdales could come back, but Toowoomba is too fat to have a team now.

Yeah I remember that now, it was a bit later they cracked the shits and split the clubs feeder team up. I’m not sure if it was Aspley who was upset that they kept losing players to the broncos or the other clubs? I remember the colts gf at Panthers and Matt gillett was gonna be handed a broncos debut and refused. Similar scenes in the QCup yeah??

I'd like to see us with a reserve grade side, but i'm not that sure ISC as it stands would support it.

Aspley only lasted a year and Broncos weren’t too keen on funding a club so went the current model of using feeder teams.

Gillett was at Wests and Hervey Bay doing his own thing. That’s all he wanted to do after playing some NYC. Then he went to Norths and impressed and came back.

All the decisions have been purely Broncos making financial choices.
