THE BOSS Maguire Stomped The Naysayers! But...8 Months Later, Here We Are.

Pretty funny as an aside that we moved heaven and earth to help and then retain Paas and Difita...who we thought would be our gun forwards for the next decade and both will end up together...at Souths.
and they're going to be a damn good team next year, if walker can stay on the field.

Over the last 4 years we have had a decent enough starting 17. Next year... not so much.

Next year we will probably all learn one way or another how good of a coach Madge actually is.

When we were at our lowest in 2020-2021, we had all of Walsh, Cobbo, Farnworth, Xoates, Dearden, Flegler, Difita, Jiki, Carrigan, Toyd, Paix, Paas, Staggs, Simpkin coming through, felt like there was a lot to be excited about.

Now it feels like we have nothing like that many exciting prospects.

You can't keep them all.
It's just a shame we've been able to keep so few. Some things you can't necessarily account for and some players eventually yearn for a change. Getting battered in those early years didn't help either - there was no light at the end of the tunnel for a few years. Criticise a player all you like for wanting to leave but imagine if you were playing for a team getting battered every week for a few years with no obvious future promise. You'd probably leave too, otherwise you'd fear you'll be part of the cull whenever the broom inevitably goes through the club.

For sure, can't keep them all...just would have been nice to keep a few more.

We did win a premiership though, so this season really shows how deep you have to dig to win just one and hy Penrith's era is so amazing.

Penrith is no fluke though. What are they doing? Can we replicate it? There is obviously a process that works, no need to reinvent the wheel. We should have the resources in principle. Isn't this why we brought in DD, to get such a process going? Obviously amazing to win a premiership ( and thank God we did), but we shouldn't be awesome some years and horrible others.

Top 5 players we overspent on for me are Payne, Reece, Cobbo, Piakura, Mam. I find it difficult not to leave out Milford and Flegler. I will say i think all are quality players, but at one time or another i believe they got contracts more then they had earned or were worth. I think if i looked back on my posts they would all be the ones i mentioned in terms of salary.

Top 5 favourite players is difficult for me tbh, i dont have many favourites. Carrigan, Oates, Willison, Turpin, Glenn probably. Some not for football reasons.

Haas was a gun forward for close to a decade - its his 9th year here.

We don't have a factory because for the last 3 seasons there hasn't been a colts competition. There is no pathway from 6 months out of school anymore. That's seriously problematic and seriously ****ing stupid from the QRL who just wanted to cut costs. NRLQ is there now but the Broncos suck at that because they gave up on the infrastructure and investment in a pathways system after school.

Broncos have only invested in players that can make the jump immediately (to relatively immediately) to Q cup at 19. The second they end up in the BRL I personally believe the chances they play NRL in their lifetime diminish signifcantly. Broncos have used the development contracts tied to the first grade side as ways to hang onto and develop the top tier talent and the majority worthwhile below that goes elsewhere.

Think how much talent gets funnelled through a full season(/s) of SG ball and then into Jersey Flegg before NSW Cup. You have to remember there is a development cap as well. You get your paws on the Verhoevens, Bukowski's, Scotts, CHT's, Francis’s of the world that other clubs wait 2-3 years to get there hands on one of those yet we have multiple of them in every age group. Bryenton, Tauaa, Koina all great players we have got our hands on in the key high school pathway stage as well in this age group that either got poached or didn't have a clear path to first grade.

The likes of Tupuse and Poese, super talented outside backs but haven’t been ready for Q-cup and before recently would have had no pathway by now. The infrastructure with NRLQ has changed and there is 12 games a year more of a pathway then there was at least for now. It's the difference between someone like a Mcconnell falling out of the system and maybe never getting an opportunity at that q-cup level which would be prolematic. Do I think he plays for the Broncos? No, but thats a lot of talent that is isolated in qld or without a pathway funelling talent into qld cup teams and resultantly qld NRL systems whether that’s a debut at 19 or 24 because you worked your way through a full system.

Panthers and NSWRL teams have Harold Matts(u16), SG Ball (u18), Jersey Flegg (u21), Ron Massey (BRL equivalent) and NSW Cup. Before this year we only really had Cyril (u17), Meninga (u19), BRL, Q-Cup. We now have the additional NRLQ but I don’t believe versing the same 3 teams 4 times for a 12 game comp is the same thing. Can you really blame the Broncos for not having invested the development cap in second wave players for the past 3 years if they didn’t have the infrastructure to develop them properly or even competitively to a Sydney system. I think the colts competition was a huge loss for QRL teams and the NRL development system. I think it does and did more than the NRLQ did. Especially considering an entire 4th team wave worth of talent was funneling in now with the Dolphins. It’s an infrastructure to development that had to be subsidised from somewhere. Just had to be.

Funny he ended up signing for the bloke he first claimed was ripping him off. His first deal with us was 5 yr for 500k under Bennett iirc. He wanted constant upgrades throughout that contract.
Best forward in the comp and it's not even close. If your elite you should be getting elite money I don't blame him or his manager for squeezing money. You simply cannot just replace haas, you buy him and all of a sudden your forward pack is sorted.

He was stupid for signing a 5yr contract before he had barely played.

I don't think the termination of the Hasting Deerings Colts had that big an impact. Brisbane largely ignored that competition and if a player was above the age of 20 and was still playing the competition it was a bad sign. Players would typically leave and go play Flegg unless they were on an NRL deal.

I think the only exception was Plath and it wasn't like the club were in a rush to sign despite some positive signs.

I thought the Broncos could have always done better with the National Youth Competition but I'd say the dissolution of that competition actually had an impact. Especially on depth because usually once players would age out they'd get a pre-season with the NRL and actually play a role in the season.
