NEWS Milford is back, baby

As Anthony Milford heaped sugar onto his Coco Pops Monday morning, he had no idea he was about to be tasked with his biggest challenge yet. To guide his former club, the Souths Magpies, to their first premiership in 13 years. Get along to Davies Park at 3PM today to see him in action:

“I didn’t know what to expect. We went through the video and he pointed out some things in my game I wasn’t doing well. I agreed. To hear I was dropped ... it was tough. I’ve never been in a position to hear those words, but I have to get over the fact I’ve been dropped and use it as a positive. I’ve always been a team-first player so whatever he thought was best for the team, I’ll accept it. While it’s disappointing, I’m hoping it’s a blessing in disguise.”

“I haven’t been up to the standards that I set myself and Kevvie’s as well. The truth is I need to be better. I have to be accountable.”

“I have some mixed emotions. Some nerves, but some excitement, too. I’m going to have a lot of family and friends coming to support me so I’m looking forward to playing some football."

Glory is only the beginning

“I am pretty keen to get back to a club where I played Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup. It’s not a new club for me. I will be going back to see some familiar faces and it’s a club I love because that’s where I started out. One thing I’m excited about is playing with Karmichael Hunt. Souths have a few ex-NRL players, Albert Kelly and Kevin Locke are there, so when I went to training on Wednesday it opened my eyes up to the quality of players there.”

“I’ll be honest, I’m not too sure what my future is at the Broncos. It’s out of my control really. I’m leaving the contract stuff to my manager and we’ll see what happens. In an ideal world, I want to stay. That’s what I hope. But I understand the Broncos have a lot of players off-contract and it’s hard to keep everyone. But just because I’ve been dropped, I’m not going to be one of those players who jumps on the phone straight away wanting a release."

“Kevvie has reassured me as well that he hasn’t given up on me. He told me to go and enjoy myself in Queensland Cup, get some confidence from playing there and then see how I go and try and find my way back into the team. I’ve copped it. I have to be better. I know there is a lot of noise around me, but I know I’m not done. I will be back.”

“I don’t look at my contract as a burden. It’s the nature of the beast. The scrutiny is what comes with playing football at this level. I am at a pretty powerful club at the Broncos and there is always a big focus on us. The Broncos expect to be in the finals every year and they expect to be winning more games than they lose. The year we made the grand final, it was a huge confidence thing for me."

Won't let them down

“As a group, we had built a lot of momentum and there was a lot of self-belief and the team gave me the confidence to back myself. I did things that season that I didn’t think I was capable of doing because the self-belief in the team was so strong. For whatever reason over the past two or three years, I haven’t been able to perform consistently. It has affected my confidence.”

" Look, I’m not the best trainer at the club but I make an effort. I’ve always felt I’m a better player than a trainer. There have been a lot of great players over the years who weren’t the best trainers. One thing I know is I do care. I care a lot about winning games for the Broncos. Every game I go out there wanting to win. I’m not one to blame anything or anyone else for what’s happened. I’m not using injuries as an excuse. I’m not too sure how long I’m going to be at Souths Logan, but I want to get back in that Broncos jumper.”

Is it possible that Kevvie wants Milf to focus on quality over quantity?

Everyone on this forum doesn't want Milf running the team, they want someone else to control the game and Milf to inject himself like he can do so well (well used to do so well).

Obviously the quality wasn't there but it's his first game with the team. If Kevvie has told him we are going to have Croft run the side, just go out there and focus on getting some good touches rather than the most.
In industry terms this is what we call being an apologist.

If touches is all Kev wants from him, then why isn't Milford even doing that well?

Clutching at straws bro.

the rest of the team has to own it too is some respects dont be looking to give it to him for the last play option, that being said he has been lazy.

Looks like he was making ok meters, breaking tackles and getting offloads in and defended well (relative to what he has been dishing up in the NRL).

Didn't set the world on fire or anything but wasn't terrible.

In this context touches show enthusiasm- even if mistakes were up I would take it if he was getting the ball and having a real shot at Norths. When a half is dropped back to ISC I don't think you want to see conservative football and patient touches. Just want to see give me the ball and enthusiasm.

He's literally playing Reserve Grade against guys who lay bricks and paint houses for a living. He's supposed to be setting the world on fire,

Thought I would make a bit of a comparison between Hunt when he got dropped back in 2017 and Milford yesterday.

I was at both games and Hunt's enthusiasm was off the charts compared to Milford yesterday.

B Hunt-80 minutes, 6 runs, 49m, two line break assists, one try assists, one dummy half run, one offload, 11 dummies, 33 passes, 44 receipts, 14 tackles, six missed, eight kicks, 173m and 1 error.

Milford-80 minutes, seven runs, 85m, three tackle breaks, two offloads, 20 passes, 28 receipts, 10 tackles, 1 miss, two kicks, 55m, one error- one ruck infringement and one offside.

How many times they touched the ball was what I wanted to compare and I thought it would be about that in difference.

11 dummies in 6 runs? His team probably wished he touched the ball less. Also 6 missed tackles out of 14 is disgusting.

Hard to do that with a team with 40% of the ball and <50% completion rate.

There were moments where Paix looked Sharp, mostly at the end, but he threw a bad pass, kicked out on the full once and struggled to contain the Norths pack who dominated the middle.

Our middle defence was atrocious last year when Paix was there. All time 2nd worst F/A in history so that shit cannot be repeated again at all costs.
Probably a big reason why Kevvie does not want to carry Paix on the bench and rather bite the bullet and let Turps develop into a 80mn hooker. A few more matches and he will hopefully be more effective in attack game long as well.

I think it's telling the first game we play where the directive seems to be to bomb the shit out of a particular corner on the field (and they do it).. we push the premiere team in the comp all the way.

I wonder how Milford saw that too, the first game he's been sat out and we play our best game in at least a season and a bit, with 2 halves who might be able to make it into a top club's top 30 as a depth signing but for us, they're the spine of the team.

Yep, I'm sure it's Souths fault. They can join Ben Hunt, Nikorima, Dearden, Croft, Bennett, Seibold, the Forwards, the Backs etc, etc in the list of people that are definitely to blame whilst Milford himself definitely isn't.
Yeah Milford dropped the ball 16 times on Sunday and that’s why they completed at 49%

As the game was played around dinner time it's highly unlikely he actually watched it.

He just has this uncanny luck of always playing in bad teams apparently.

Who knows, maybe he'll go better next week against the plumbers and carpenters and factory workers, because that's exactly where he deserves to be playing these days.
