PARRAMATTA skipper Nathan Cayless has decided to retire from rugby league at the end of this season, with an announcement expected as soon as this afternoon.

Having just led Parramatta for the 200th time last weekend, the Kiwi warhorse this week told friends 2010 would be his swansong season.

Cayless’s place in the starting front row has been under the microscope during Parramatta’s below-par opening month and there have been calls for coach Daniel Anderson to bench him and hand the captaincy to fellow Eels veteran Nathan Hindmarsh.

The 32-year-old, however, has the support of his teammates and was again named in the top 13 for Monday night’s clash against Canberra.

Cayless’s manager Wayne Beavis was unable to confirm whether an announcement would be made today, but sources inside the club told The Daily Telegraph that Cayless had made up his mind.

If true, congratulations on a great career Nathan, I always thought you were a great prop who played the game in the right spirit.

Congrats Nathan. Another unheralded champion of the game. A fine leader for the Eels and the Kiwis alike. I'm sure the World Cup win will live in his memory forever.

TBH thought he had a couple of good seasons early on in his career then never hit top form again after that. A great club player yes, but I think the Eels paid overs for him throughout the years...

Never in the top prop shelf IMO but congrats on a successful first grade career. No doubt highlight for him would have been the 2008 World cup. Pity he never won a premiership.

Yeah he was a solid club prop and led by example and was a pretty good captain I suppose. Interesting to see if they give the captaincy to Hindmarsh, from what I have gathered he isn't keen on captaining and at his age they may look to Ben Smith, Jarryd Hayne, Luke Burt as a better option.

Imagine hoe influentil Hayne will become if he is made captain. WOW

Yeah I only put his name there because no doubt all the Sydney rags will plead his case for him.

every tackle the whole NSW side would dive to the ground giving them 13 shots at goal.

Congratulations on a fine career. A pleasure to meet you a few seasons ago and one that I always remember. Best of luck in your future Nathan. A fine champion of the game.
