Sources with knowledge of the deal, who were not permitted to speak publicly, said it comprised about $520 million a year from Foxtel for the pay-television component, about $150 million a year from Nine for the free-to-air rights, and about $30 million a year from a broadcaster in New Zealand.

The deal, which would run until the end of 2034, would give Nine exclusive coverage of the State of Origin and the NRL grand final. It will continue to broadcast three matches a week and finals on Nine Network and 9Now.

Foxtel and its streaming service, Kayo Sports, will remain the only place to watch all regular season matches and the finals, excluding the grand final.

Nine, the publisher of AFR Weekend, had placed a bid to broadcast the entire suite of rights across free-to-air and its paywalled streaming service, Stan, but ultimately agreed to retain the free-to-air rights and continue to work with Foxtel.

Half a billion from DAZN owned Foxtel alone. Nine looks like a Big Chocky midget by comparison, but somehow they have squeaked out a clutch retention of the status quo. Don't ask me how.

At that price Nine are getting the rights for massive unders and Foxtel are paying overs.

Nine can thank their lucky stars Origin and the Grand Final are on the anti siphoning list.

They have benefitted for decades to the tune of tens of millions of dollars from this warped rights market.

That law has clearly become antiquated and needs to be revised to reflect current trends.

I like it. Fta should get most games if anything. **** kayo with their constant ****ing problems. Also it’s tradition at this stage.

So an extra 300 million per year? That's great, salary cap will explode and should be able to take the best from rugby and 7's. Also didn't want to sign up for stan.
