Kotoni Staggs has confirmed he also found out about Kevin Walters' sacking via the media, labelling it "not the right thing to do".

The announcement of Walters' departure caused shockwaves, with captain Adam Reynolds the first to reveal the players didn't find out through the club.

At the time, Broncos chief executive officer Dave Donaghy admitted "things can get out ahead of time".Speaking on 2GB's Wide World of Sports, Staggs revealed his disappointment at the process in how players found out.

With players on holidays, Donaghy said getting them on a call simultaneously was "challenging".

Speaking on 2GB's Wide World of Sports, Staggs revealed his disappointment at the process in how players found out.

"I have a good relationship with Kev, I loved playing under him," he said.

"He helped me get the best out of my footy. I was pretty down by the way we found out actually, it was off the news, that's not what you want to hear about your coach.

"I gave him a call after it and told him thanks for the last four years I've had, I learned a lot off him and wished him the best for his future.

"It wasn't the thing I wanted to see on the news ... that's not the right way to go about it I guess but we've got to move on from there."

After a season where the Broncos went from a grand final to 12th, the club's culture has come under fire.

Staggs denied there was an issue there as the club wrangles with the current situation surrounding Ezra Mam.

The Broncos five-eighth was involved in a car crash where he was alleged to be driving unlicensed and testing positive to a roadside drug test.

A young girl and mother suffered injuries in the crash. Mam has since checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic.

Staggs said Mam has "got a lot of support" and admitted "that's what I needed" when he previously found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

The Broncos centre is backing his teammate to return in the future.

"I hope there's a spot there for him, I know he'll make sure he'll work 110 per cent to get back there and I just wish him all the best with his recovery," he said.

Jesus, is Kotoni looking to get sacked here too heh. A bit lippy towards his bosses when he is looking for a new contract from the club!

Maybe he knows he's not getting another contract

Well Saints supporters I know are convinced Staggs will be at the Dragons next year, a straight swap with Brisbane for Hunt :xxxx:

This would be a high IQ move by the Broncos, especially if we've decided to keep Cobbo > Staggs
Saints fans I know are convinced Valentine will be fullback, with Staggs and Queen Gutho in the centres. You're right though, a move like that would make some sense for Brisbane with Hunt joining to replace Mam.

Kotoni Staggs has given Broncos bosses a clip over the handling of Kevin Walters’ shock exit from the Broncos.

The strike centre on Tuesday poured more fuel on the dumpster fire that has been the club’s post-season from hell when he shared his displeasure at his former mentor’s axing.

After a reportedly damning end of season review, Walters was shown the door — with players only told of Walters’ exit after the news broke.

Staggs has now revealed he also reached out to Walters when the news broke.

“I have a good relationship with Kev, I loved playing under him,” Staggs said on 2GB.

So Kev helped him play his best footy? His best footy resulted in him not playing Origin and the team finishing 12th? Brilliant.

I think Kotoni was probably just saying the fact that the news broke out on media before the playing group wasn’t great which he is probably right. Broncs made the right call by getting rid of him but probably should have had the decency to tell the blokes before they made the move. Maybe they feared it would cause a divide as some players supported Kev and others not so much, not sure. Either way I believe they made a smart calculated move that was probably in the best interest of the club moving forward.

I'd say that is difficult if it got leaked straight after the board meeting that decided to get rid of him.

It's always going to be leaked to the media before the playing group can be told though... makes it harder when it was likely the Chairman that leaked it.

I dont really think there's a good way to break that kind of news to the playing group before the media catch wind of it.... short of pulling them all in straight after a training session and telling them that Kevvie is gone 5mins after he's finished the session.

There's too much media scrutiny on the Broncos for them to keep anything secret for long

So some players & fans are still butthurt over it.

Just proves the players had too much influence.

If players aren't happy, get rid of them.

I'm not butthurt at all but the players should not have had to hear about it through the media. Whoever leaked it is unprofessional and a fuckwit.

Agree with most of this but the divide, if it was going to happen would happen regardless of whether they heard it before the media or not IMO.

Yes…very difficult…to figure out…which board member….it likely was…
