CROSS FORUM NRL 2023 Round 8 Discussion

He tries his heart out Crossland. He must be an amazing bloke because he's played 40 odd games and has yet to nail down a position.

They desperately need a specialist, but who?
He's the perfect example of knights juniors for the last 8yrs or so... talked up deluxe as a star junior coming through, but has barely looked first grade.

Meanwhile other Newcastle products are genuine stars (Cordner, Latrell, etc.)... even Haas was from around there wasn't he??

They just can't seem to hang onto any of the good youth products to build a nucleus from

I was so optimistic about where the NRL was at after the first five weeks.. it started to look like Rugby League as we knew it.. but alas

Crossland's best game was when he covered Gamble's cat 1 as a 6 but Gamble is a better 6 than him and he is a terrible Hooker, especially in defence, They tossed out Levi and probably should of kept him.

I feel like Gus should of went to Newcastle more than any other team outside of Warriors, they have the cream of youth talent in NSW and lose them all.

Maybe they should have signed Levi for 2023, but the decision to let him go was sound. He played five seasons there, 83 games in total and it just wasn't working out. They've been unlucky with Brailey but they should have had a proper under-study. I don't see anything from Rugless to suggest he'll be much better for them.

I don't think Gus has any connection with the Knights. He isn't Merry Poppins, he's obviously got great contacts and ideas but it helps when he has strong relationships at the club and his relationship with the Bulldogs goes back longer than either of us have been alive.

That Crossland game you mentioned was the only time I've seen anything in him. Must be a great bloke and he does try - I'm just shocked with the amount of NRL games he's played.

True but I doubt Gus had any more connections with Warriors then he did with Newcastle.

Covid really fucked some long term potential pathways Warriors could have established with him there.

Haas moved to Qld when he was 12, he is our homegrown player, literally months away from only being QLD eligible, under the old rules he would of played for us likely.

It's a similar story for Herbie who is a pom but has been associated with us since he was 14 well before he was on the radar for any super league clubs.

He wasn't there long before COVID virtually shut everything down. If anything, it ended up hurting the Warriors more than anything as he was able to gather intel for his next appointment and he's clued them into some quality NZ talent coming through. Even when he was with the Warriors, I seem to remember him being linked with the Bulldogs and pitching what he would do if he was brought into the club. Almost seemed like an informal interview for the position.

So I'm not sure if his heart would be in it for the Knights like it was with the Panthers and the Bulldogs.

Of course Warriors fans may have a different perspective and recognise the improvements he made. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall, but it seemed like he was barely there before he wanted to go to Canterbury and help them.

If that is the case Gus can **** himself, I thought the appointment would of been massive for the game had he stayed there though.

I'm of the view with the right Management top to bottom Warriors should be a powerhouse of the game.

The amount of players that end up in the elite SEQ league schools before Warriors have even noticed is criminal.

To be fair, I believe it was a consultancy role so he didn't have the responsibilities he has at the Bulldogs. It's a role he's played at various clubs and it hasn't always worked out for them. He was involved with Souths when they were brought back, it took them years to find their footing and they did it without Gus.

The Cowboys brought him in for some consultancy work when they were struggling in 2010. The Cowboys showed him their entire operations and gave him full access to the club. Gus did his review, said thanks but no thanks and described them as a retirement home and not worth his time. Within months he goes to Penrith, guts the playing roster and tries to balance the cap so he can poach JT from the Cowboys.

But you're right, if there was a Newcastle version of Gus, the Knights would be in a better place.

It is basically because all their pathways are linked to the gold mine that is regional NSW, I think Gus role was limited due to covid anyway regarding Warriors, he was talking about NZ pathways but when the club couldn't even be there all he could do was SEQ poaching(like Walsh).

It is a big shame though, sure Bulldogs needed help but **** the Sydney clubs.

I do feel bad For Newcastle because of how much their fans turn up for their club through think and thin, I will always have respect for a club with good fan turnout even with long term shit footy.

Of course Warriors fans may have a different perspective and recognise the improvements he made.

From a warriors fan perspective Gould offered us hope that the club was on the right track and prepared to invest in the right areas. It gave us credibility and a connection to the powerbrokers in the game. And I’m sure he helped us out behind the scenes to enable us to stay in the comp during covid. All this was probably worth more than any on the field results.

In any case his role was around pathways and systems which was very long term. I believe he did offer advice and planning which we are hopefully using some of now, even though he couldn’t get hands on.

He also offered something in recruitment (credibility?) as we signed a huge amount of quality and quantity that was unheard of for the warriors - SJ directly because of Gould but also DWZ, Walsh, afb, etc, whom we would not normally get.

I personally felt Vlandys had a hand in Gould coming (they are close) and wanted us to sort ourselves out for the good of the game - and to protect the NZ rights and set up the game in NZ long term for potential expansion. I wonder if V’landy had a hand in Gould taking the job? Just personal opinion but I don’t think the Warriors would get Gould without a ‘greater good’ push behind it?

Ultimately Gould was but one important cog that I believe kept the club from folding and his influence off the field was what was needed at the time.

Smash em bro

I can't believe the Cowboys only used 15 players against the Knights, they managed to get away with the win, but what's the point of leaving 2 guys unused on the bench

Imagine if Billy picks Tuilagi ahead of Oates for Origin.

Just shows you how much relevance teams in the top quarter of the ladder have when it comes to Origin.

You'd be flat out picking more than a couple of players out of that Cows side on form yet last season even Tommy Dearden was getting a run. Penrith similar situation, Luai is not better than someone like a Burton or Hynes. Yet they chuck him in due to his combination with Yeo and Cleary.
