The NRL has blocked Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus from taking up a coaching role with Super Rugby club the Brumbies.

Earlier on Thursday, the Canberra-based franchise announced the 34-year-old would travel to the nation's capital once a week to assist the Brumbies as their "collision coach".

His new role in teaching tackle-specific skills was described as his preparation for life after league as he enters his final NRL season with the Knights.

But the NRL wasn't willing to authorise the position with its cross-code rivals, given salary cap conditions apply to all currently-contracted players.

"Neither Danny Buderus nor the Knights have sought permission from the NRL to enter into a third party agreement as his playing contract requires and as the club is required under the salary cap rules," NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske told Fairfax Media.

Um, why did Buderus ever think this would be allowed? Deadset.

Agree with the NRL here, you can't be promoting other leagues. That's like a public figure at Apple working for Samsung part time, it's just a conflict of interest. Horrible analogy I know.

Agree with Nashy. The problem here isn't that he wants to help Union, it's that he didn't get permission to do so from the NRL, and thus wouldn't have had the pay counted on his salary, or audited in the salary cap.

We don't seem to mind that SBW is playing Union and boxing on his way to playing League again, so I can't see why we'd have a problem with a guy doing tackle coaching with a union team. It's not like he's out there saying "hey, Union is way better, don't play league"...

I see your point with the Apple vs Samsung analogy, broncospwn, but I think it's a bit different. In that sense you'd potentially have a developer assisting Samsung to improve their devices aided by the IP and advantage Apple provided, which would be in direct competition with them. However, Buderus helping some players with their tackling technique is not helping improve the Union product, nor giving away competitive advantage of the NRL.

If anything I'd liken it to a software developer doing part time tutoring of post graduates at university...

How the hell did they come up with the name "collision coach" ?

I can see both sides of the story but it doesn't worry me at all about the conflict of interest. As Coxy said, why are we ok with SBW and then Bedsy makes headlines.

Dumb move from Buderus. Surely he could wait until he retires before coaching with another code.

Well I guess putting it that way does make more sense. Why is the salary cap an issue though, I thought the salary cap is only an issue if the club guarantees the wages from a 3rd party source, not if the player just finds another job elsewhere?

The difference is that Sonny Bill is not currently contracted to an NRL club like Buderus is. The argument that it is just a low-profile coaching job on the side for Buderus goes out the window when the Rugby Union team parade him at a press conference wearing ACT Brumbies gear. It would almost be like Folau playing NRL next year while still being paid by AFL to promote them.

For what it's worth I don't like the idea of SBW playing league again either after how he left the Bulldogs, though that is more of a moral issue than anything.

I'm pretty sure only 2 players are under that rule.

The rest are all part of the cap. It's to stop dodgy dealings.

Knights organise a 5 million endorsement and say they had nothing to do with it, and get the company involved to go a long. You have cap cheating made nice and simple.

So if Josh Hoffman gets a side job as a PC Technician he wouldn't be allowed?

I thought the only issue here is that Buderus is basically promoting another code, wasn't aware it's a salary cap issue.

Wouldn't be in your club contract that you can't work in other sports while you are playing at that particular club. Also if I was Bedsy I would be training with the Knights considering they had a dissapointing year and need to improve next season.

Good point. How 'bout concentrating on your own team Bedsy........you mercenary prick.

It's not like NTLE are going that well that they can have a part time 1st grade dummy half.

I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with the code, it's the fact it's a job which makes him money.

I think you'll find they aren't allowed to work outside of the NRL cap while they are registered NRL players.

It would have little to do with the salary cap, but has been tarted up as a secondary reason to support the NRL's otherwise petty case that it hurts the NRL's image and/or "we didn't get a say, therefore it's banned".

As a Rugby League supporter, I have no issues with it. In fact, it's a boost for Rugby League that one of its immortals (Andrew Johns) and one of its current players are involved in coaching (well, more specifically it would appear, "consultant") roles in other codes.

Does the NRL have an issue with Cooper Cronk training with and no doubt "consulting with" the Brisbane Lions on the high altitude training camp in Arizona? I wonder what commercial arrangements are involved for the trip - would Cooper be funding it out of his own pocket?

PS the NRL needs to very quickly get John Grant and the INDEPENDENT commission out of the operational firing line by appointing a CEO to the NRL as soon as possible.

I'm certain it would be a vanilla restraint of trade clause, but only limited to the scope of the trade (i.e. you can't play any other sport while under contract registered with the NRL).

Don't buy it.

NRL players can't go out and get jobs, because their club could sort it very easily for them. It's no different to the Broncos Leagues Club having to pay players under the cap when they are given jobs there.
