NRL Round 20 Discussion

Storms next home game, Broncos. They won't have lost 2 in a row at home many times 😜

I think one of the ex players last year was saying that taking that line doesn't actually result in a charge down and they would actually need to aim at trajectory of the ball.

Harry was only there to put pressure on the kick and he recklessly ran through the leg.

What's he meant to do?... well he got that close and he was only putting pressure on so why didn't he just make a tackle on Brooks?

If he actually wanted to charge it down then he should've had his arms up and also running a line that allows him to aim at the trajectory of the ball

So if he had his arms up is it ok? It's not against the rules to put pressure on the kicker, so I still see no issue.

What's he meant to do? It shouldn't be a penalty.

Unless it's against the Storm.

He has every right to pressure the kicker but every time you do you take a risk that you could end up accidentally doing something illegal.

If you're willing to take that risk, you gotta suffer the consequences if you do something illegal.

He got his timing wrong.

Melbourne were their own worst enemy tonight, but that sets a bad precedent.

Granted it was worse than the one that Hughes tried to milk where he extends his foot into the chaser and then dives.

That's kind of my point. The amount of gamesmanship by them in terms of milking (that gets rewarded), while their history of dodgy tactics rarely ends up being punished. It's nice to see them on the end of a soft penalty and lose the game because of it.

No ... he made contact with the leg... that's a penalty nowadays... hence why Hughes extends his leg out looking for contact all the time.

He wasn't trying to charge the ball down... if he was he'd actually be aiming at the trajectory of the ball.

He was trying to put pressure on... there's nothing wrong if he just made a normal tackle on the kicker with a wrapping motion.

How do they deal with that sort of thing in AFL? I watch next to nothing but surely similar happens when players are trying to smother kicks? Not set kicks obviously, but surely kicking while in traffic you get peoples legs getting hit by attempted blockers.

He got his timing ****ing perfect. He could have charged it down or smashed the bloke into oblivion. The idiot just ran at his leg though.

I think we take the loss and rest Reyno.

We aren't making top 4. The last two times Reyno has played there, something has happened. '23 he got knocked out, '24 he got injured.

He's cursed at that ground.

It's the right call from the officials and the onus is on Grant to avoid the leg. A player of his calibre ought to have known better...

...I just think the way it went down was pretty poor. I don't think it should have taken a captain's challenge for us to get there.

That in combination with Melbourne trying to milk one earlier just reflects poorly on the game.

I thought the ref was sending it to the bunker because he spotted the contact and wanted the video review.

Ended up being a smart captains challenge, but was only possible because the ball went dead and created a stoppage in play.

Had Harry put proper pressure on the kicker Brooks probably sprays it sideways and storm end up with great field position

I wonder if it would be in the NRL's best interest to review every field goal/field goal attempt ala tries and foul play?

Like Brocko says, if Manly blow their challenge early we're probably talking about Melbourne earning another two points they didn't deserve.

Except for the one time of the year Coates destroys us, cause you know, ex-Bronco game and all

The frustrating thing is that the ref can send field goals up for bunker review... and the bunker can check things like offside, markers not square, illegal walls/blocks, etc.

I'm not sure if one has been sent up... but you know when one does eventually get sent up there will be people blowing up everywhere, because there have already been so many times where they haven't sent them up and there's basically penalties on every single one for players leaving early/not square

The officials do have a safety net in that teams can't challenge for off-side since it's determined by the on-field officials.

Then again, until they hire somebody competent like Super Freak into the bunker, I'm always going to be wary. With that said, I think Butler performed his job well tonight.

This isn't Grant's first time running through a leg an getting penalised for this. I can't remember the last one but he has done it before. He knows the rules and whether you like the rule or not, in modern interpretations, there can be no argument it was the right call, especially against someone who has done the same thing before.
