Just a week after the dismissal of coaches Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper, senior refs Steve Lyons and Tony De Las Heras were marched out the door and told their services were no longer required.

A furious Lyons last night said he would take legal action.

"They just called me in and gave me no reason other than saying they were going with younger blokes," Lyons, 42, said.
He believes he has an unfair dismissal and age discrimination case against the NRL

I didn't see this being posted. Haven't been here that much.

just show the judges one game of footy this year and this will be laughed out of court, they will wonder why they haven't sacked more of these *****.

If what he says is true then it's a bit of a joke really. He is not the oldest ref and he was good enough to not only referee almost every week but be paired with a junior ref on most occasions (he was paired with Henry Perenara for five weeks straight ffs!).

The video refs were the main problem this year; how about sacking a few of them and getting Lyons up in the box instead.

What games were these referees apart of?

I really want to know how these 2 refs are the first to go. I can think of 2 other refs who are titled as the top refs. Who make similar mistakes every game (including rep and final matches) as well as over many seasons and they some how still have their jobs.

These two are the worst refs IMO. They don't just make one obvious bad call, they constantly get shit wrong.

One of Rugby League's most famous moments.

I'd be interested to see what they've done recently and what the general opinion was of those opinions and whether these refs. performances were bad and had a negative effect on the game.

I agree that the video refs. really need to be reviewed. Their job is a lot easier yet they're making some terrible mistakes.

By the sounds of it, the referee's association could have handle this a lot better. I think both the refs in question have a reasonable unfair dismissal case. And if the allegations about termination because they were too old are true, the ref's association is probably in hot water.

No doubt it will settle out of Court. Talk about community engagement - I wonder how anyone over the age of 40 feels about the alleged comments.

Are these guys on contract base or full-time.

If they've been told they're too old, then I'd say the NRL is up the creek and will need to pay a bit of money.

Who knows? Best guess would be full time employees, so they'd need to be performance managed out (potentially arguable for the NRL, but doubtful) or made redundant (no chance, there's a massive shortage of refs)
