NRL TV Rights Deal

Good article mate, thanks.

Come on Dave, you can do it! I would love for Rupert to be gone.

I've never had Fox, but everyone I've setup Netflix for (extended families on both sides) has either cancelled their subscription, or is trying to find a good alternative to watch NRL on, at which point they'll be cancelling too.

Judging by the FUD coming out of his mouthpieces, Uncle Rupert is pretty worried. That AFL stunt was quite funny. "You can't fire me, I quit. And I never loved you anyway!"

I hope Foxtel retain it. It would be shit if it was streaming only beyond Nine's awful shit.

I think it's a pretty good gamble because I don't think Foxtel can afford to dump the NRL at this stage, it would hit the subscriber numbers pretty hard I reckon.

But if Foxtel did pull out then Google picking up the online streaming will bring in dollars and I would think surely the other FTA channels would look at picking up the remaining 4 NRL games between them.

Murdock would have to be getting concerned, the Foxtel business model of exclusive deals and forcing subscribers to pay through the nose for things they don't want just to watch the things they do is quickly faltering as competition starts to appear.

So, Google want to stream the games on YouTube.

I hope they plan on streaming it in HD.

360p and 480p isn't that good. Not much better than what you currently get on the NRL Live app.

I hope Google take the rights and Foxtel goes to shit. Foxtel can get fucked.

That's dumb. We are not ready for streaming as the only way to access content in Australia yet. In 10 years we will be better suited.

I think we've shit the bed here trying to force foxtel out. It is fanciful that Amazon/Google are going to whisk us away like a white knight and give us 1 billion dollars for something that has little value outside of the east coast of Australia.

Have google or amazon even raised the possibility of buying the streaming rights to the NRL?

Locking out the only broadcaster in the country who actually gives a shit about the game is a bad idea no matter what BS gambles you have.

sure, but keep in mind ch10 has lachlan murdoch on the board and 7 already has a vested interest in AFL, so they're still going to 1) be dealing with someone they don't want to deal with, and 2) receive less money than they might've done with foxtel.

the NRL could end up with a better deal in the long run - but there's a lot of caveats attached to that hope.

I'm with you guys. I expect the other networks will be more than happy to take a piece of the pie. Unless of course Dave signed an exclusivity clause with 9 where they're the only FTA network allowed rights of course...

neither are going to pay what foxtel would though, and ultimately it is all about the money?

they can have all the freedom of their game that they want, if they're not getting enough money to pay the players/promote and grow the game/keep clubs afloat/have a slush fund for future expansion or a rainy day scenarios, it's not going to do any good.

if it wasn't about the money, why are we constantly trying to match the AFL on the valuation of rights? why not be happy with 800mill less if you've got control? because deep down it is all about the money.

Foxtel give good coverage of games and offer a variety of shows like Sterlo, NRL 360, etc.

They give far better cover of the sport than 9

I would be quite upset to see them miss out

They have done the right thing for rugby league

The right thing for rugby league would be making sure Greg Alexander and Mark Gasnier's opinions are never heard again.

So people are happy for Nine to have some, 7 to have some, 10 to have some, Google to have some. What a **** around. It would take longer for most fans to work out where they can watch the game.

We can add confusion, but god forbid we have Foxtel with all the games. Nooooo sir.

It would be tough never hearing Vossy commentator again.
