The NRLQ is an Under 21s competition comprising of the Queensland based teams. The format was introduced last year and this year it has been expanded into a twelve round competition.

Last year, the Dolphins were far and away the best team in the competition. However as the competition progressed, so did the Brisbane Broncos who nearly knocked the Dolphins off until a couple of critical errors proved costly.

Expect the quality of the competition to improve this year and if nothing else expect to see some future NRL stars ply their trade.

The team list should be out tomorrow afternoon, but don't be shocked if it isn't revealed until later in the week.

The competition is available through the QPlus app.

Unfortunately, the Brisbane Broncos home games will not be played at Suncorp Stadium. They will be played at their affiliate home grounds - Sunshine Coast Stadium, UAA Park, Kougari Oval and Davies Park respectively.

Seems a bit early in the year for this isn't it?

Won't the young guys still be playing Meninga and the older already playing Qcup?

It is strange timing.

A few of the Meninga reps are out of contention so I'd imagine they'll be called into the Broncos plus there's a few 20-21 year olds playing local A-grade.

I'd expect to see all four clubs go through 30-40 players and we'll see a few bolters from Cyril.

I just hope it isn't like last year. Koina and Tauaa looked impressive and before you knew it both were down in Sydney. Hopefully the Queensland clubs can pinch a few back.

How do salary caps work for the NSW Cup Sydney teams?

The ones that are direct affiliates to a Sydney club dogs, penrith, etc.

Do they effectively have a second cap that they can use for younger guys... or to at least hoard some of the younger guys who could end up being depth/T&T guys down the track.

We've got 3 affiliates, but I believe we just give them the leftovers from our Top 30 + Dev Deals.

A guy like Jett didn't snag a Top 30 or Dev Deal, so he's now having to go purely through Qcup and being contracted by Burleigh... if we were in Sydney and Jett was a panther... could he have been funnelled into their Flegg team and then their NSW Cup team, but he's still got access to training, weights, eating programs, coaching, etc.

Meaning he's got a bit of security footy wise if he ends up maturing later on and the club can keep track of him. He'd probably still have to get a 9-5 job, but having access to the facilities and the parent club keeping an eye on him would mean he's a chance later on.

For the broncos he had to get a Top 30 contract or Dev Deal to effectively keep getting access to the facilities, gym, coaching, etc. but he didn't get it so now he's unable to get access to all those top tier things needed for footy development and so now it's up to Burleigh to turn him into an NRL player... or he just fades away because he has to get on with life and earning a living.

Your guess is as good as mine.

If we take Penrith as an example, the vast majority of their NSW Cup side are NRL squad players. They'll either call up Flegg or players out of St Marys to fill in the gap. The St. Mary players would receive a match fee which would be similar to a training contract.

I'm not sure what a standard SG Ball or Jersey Flegg contract looks like. Now let's apply some mathematics. Let's say Jersey Flegg players are on a standard training contract, so they pocket $1000 per week. Let's say 30 players earn this, so it'd roughly be 1.5 million.

Now I'm going to say that's a higher estimate, but we're probably talking high six low seven figures.

Broncos have a few players on training contracts. Michael Waqa, Beni Allen, Seth Gundry, Bailey McConnell, Preston Cassidy etc. still have access to the club. It's just not as big a squad as the NSW based clubs.

What makes life tough for these players is that they'll train at the Broncos, then report to their affiliate. They might run one training session with those boys where they're the outsider and they may or may not be on the team on the weekend. It's tough to build a culture like Penrith have when everything is so fragmented.

That's why most NSW based clubs have dropped the affiliate programs as well. It just makes everything more streamlined and they essentially treat NSW Cup as an Under 25s competition.

I'm still not entirely sure Waqa is on any kind of contract with us this year, a few questions might get answered tonight assuming the NRLQ lists come out on time.

hmmm NRL, NRLW, NRLQ - you really expect drunk me to differentiate between these? sigh... lol

Good call.

Darbs has named a strong line-up to kick the year off. Good to see some of the Seagulls reps rewarded with selection.

A lot more A grade players picked this year, Saunders, Ford, Connell, Cassidy, Allen and Turner all playing A grade in Brisbane or Gold Coast.

Coates and Bryce both made Cup debuts last week. Shibasaki first game of Cup last week.

Bukowski consistent Cup.

The rest Meninga.

From the last game against Dolphins last year.

Innes, Morcom, Scott (Injured), Waqa, Igasan, Koina, Feaunati and Sefo missing.

A tougher edge to this team, more A grade and more Cup.

I was going to ask where Scott has been (thank you)

Other than Innes and Koina who have gone to NSW and Waqa who is in no man’s land right now what’s the go with the other 4?
