Well, that's one way to end your season.
No other way to say it, the Broncos choked. Dogs were never in it first half until Keighran nailed a 40-20. That gave Canterbury a shot when the Broncos had their bench on and the pack was suddenly getting trampled over. The try to Finau was tolerable, but when Tramontana scored from dummy half, it was obvious the floodgates could open.
The early try to Rudolph should have steadied the ship, but a series of controversial calls really inspired the Bulldogs. Firstly one of their forwards was marched for throwing a punch at Saitua, mid-Broncos line-break when the Broncos had Canterbury at sixes and sevens. That eventually led to Canterbury scoring off a Broncos error.
Then not long after, Tiatia looked to have scored, only to be binned for abusing the referee.
That happened around mid-way through the second half, Brisbane really should have gone on with it. Unfortunately, they thought the same thing and just kept trying to score off every play. They had no interest getting through their sets and gave the Dogs far too many opportunities.
The killer was at 28-14. Brisbane had a scrum feed inside Canterbury's half when Tristian Hope was penalised for a scrum infringement. The Dogs bullied the Broncos right-side defence and just tore them apart scoring try after try after try. The match-winner was also an eery sense of deja vu from a few weeks ago when I believe it was Brown from Penrith out-lept Fauid to win the game for Penrith.
Individually, there were some good performances, but as a team it was incredibly poor form. Usually I'm not one for bad sportsmanship, but watching Kiko Manu run down time by racing 50m backwards and conceding a goal-line drop-out felt like an appropriate way to finish the game.
The Broncos beat themselves.
