COREY Oates only missed two games for his beloved Broncos over Origin I, but he is not in a hurry to do it again.
As the towering winger goes into his second Maroons camp, he is determined to prove to Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett that he can back up for the Broncos’ Round 16 clash with the Bulldogs following next Wednesday’s Origin II showdown with NSW.
After his Queensland debut two weeks ago, Oates was rested for Brisbane’s loss to the Warriors three days later.
And while he will have the same amount of time to recover for the Bulldogs game, the 21-year-old says he finds it too frustrating watching his club play from the sidelines.
Oates appreciates why Bennett rested him, but he does not think he will need it again this Origin series.
“I probably won’t need it,” Oates said of more rest time.
“I felt pretty good when the boys were playing in New Zealand. It’s just something you have to get your head around really.
“(Bennett) did it just so I could focus on Origin, just so it wouldn’t get to me during the week. That was the only reason I didn’t play.
“I really wasn’t thinking about (the Warriors) anyway but he thought it would help me and that’s what Wayne told me.”
Oates made his comeback for the Broncos last Thursday, in their much-needed 26-18 victory over the Raiders.
While the try-scoring machine was unable to make his way over the line, he certainly contributed strongly to his side’s attack, making 12 runs for 138m and two tackle busts.
With the Broncos now on a bye, Oates will not have to miss any extra game time if he is named against the Bulldogs.
In the meantime however, he is preparing to focus again on Origin II and said he is looking forward to getting back into Queensland camp.
“It was good, really enjoyable,” he said of Origin I.
“It’s not real full on ... it’s all pretty schmick. I had a really good time. Hopefully I can do it all again.”
