Old Broncos Stats

For many, Darren Lockyer is the greatest fullback in history. I thought it'd be interesting to see how often he broke the line in comparison to Billy Slater and get an idea of how his numbers stack up.

Sometimes memories can warp a player's abilities, making them better than what they were, but these figures demonstrate just how adept Lockyer was on his feet.
Locky is the real goat

You can't compare forward stats from back then with now. They reduced the interchange so most forwards are playing 15-20 minutes more a game now.

Only two players have won a Golden Boot in two different positions - Lockyer and Thurston.

Only one player has done it playing two distinctly different positions though, and his name isn’t Thurston.

No more needs to be said.

And tackling was around the mid section/legs in a classic tackle style which is far more effective. But wrestling is the new vogue to slow the PTB, so many more bump off tackles now trying to go high

Technically there are still 6 positions, 80 minutes, 480 minutes of game time split between (almost always) 9-10 players. Unless you mean starting forwards are getting more, benchies less.

Cheers for posting @Big Pete, makes for some very interesting reading.

Wish I could go back to watching footy in the early 2000s. Some good memories, and it was a different type of game.

It blows my mind these stats aren't readily available for fans and they can't readily compare past and present players. It's huge in other sports and just makes it easier for younger fans to appreciate the history of the game.

I'm thinking about transcribing it all into a spreadsheet and sharing it with the fanbase. It would take ages to complete though, so I'm just happy to pass on any stats you guys would be interested to know. I've got all the end of reviews going back to 1999 which I believe was the first year where they kept in-depth stats breakdowns.

I'm not sure if you've come across it but The Dark Knight's YouTube channel is fantastic. It's basically a yearbook of every Newcastle season with hour long compilation of every Newcastle Knights bulletin and segment on various shows. I like to just throw on a random year and it brings back so many memories.

You can’t compare the stats to back then. The game is very different now. There is a lot more time now actually playing, with shot clocks, reduced interchanges etc players in the forwards, particularly when starting, are getting more minutes. The other is the increase in speed of play, defensive lines are retreating more often so of course the metres increases.

a stat that isn’t reported, but I think should be, is how many metres are made on the next hit up. That’s what sets taumololo and Papali apart to most forwards. The next hit up after them is usually a good one because of their good run and play the ball.

also, the tackle efficiency stat is shit. Boyd had a 98% efficiency at fullback, but that’s because when he missed, he didn’t even touch the guy so it didn’t count as a miss... same goes for offa, the amount of times someone just ran around the useless **** because he wasn’t looking was ridiculous

I still think it would be a better guide than providing nothing at all and the stats are interesting to look at because they actually give you an idea of how effective these players.

It's certainly better than making up your own stats just like you did.
