'Our home, always will be': Staggs' message to Dolphins

BHQArticleImageLarge132.jpg

Kotoni Staggs is the proven 'Battle of Brisbane' specialist so it is only natural that he wants to add another chapter in the new book of feuds with the Dolphins.

The Broncos centre will be integral to his sixth-placed side's chances of making a statement on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium.

His message to the eighth-placed Dolphins about stadium rights is clear.

"It has been our home for a long time and always will be," Staggs said.

"They are a team from Redcliffe and they just come over and play on the same field."

One thing we know about Staggs is that home is where the heart is.

The inaugural clash in 2023 between the cross-town rivals demanded an iconic moment to base a new rivalry upon.

Staggs provided it with a length of the field try in the 78th minute to secure an 18-12 win.

It was what he did next that said everything about his passion for the club.

Pointing at the hallowed turf Staggs exclaimed, 'this is our home'. There was an expletive thrown in for emphasis.

At that moment the gun centre enunciated exactly what he thought of the talk from the Dolphins in the lead-up that they were co-tenants of Suncorp Stadium and that it was their home too.

It is, of course, but Staggs was having none of it. The Broncos fans salivated over that moment and still do.

"When they first came in, there was talk about who owns Suncorp and the first game we ever played, you can't take that away," Staggs said.

"That try and what I did in that game was something that came to me when I scored and I said, 'this is our home'.

"It just came straight to me to say what I said and I pointed to the ground.

"Every time we play the Dolphins I am always up for it, the boys are as well and it's going to be no different come Saturday."

The 26-year-old was at it again in round four this year when he barged his way over for a try in a 20-12 win and pointed at the hallowed turf with both hands and reiterated what he had said two years previously.

Staggs is a proud Wiradjuri man from Wellington, NSW and this week's Indigenous round is also one he looks forward to.

"My dream was to play one game here and being here for eight years I have loved every minute of it," he said.

"Now being part of the leadership group and asked to design Indigenous jerseys, I don't do it just for myself. It is my family I am representing. Indigenous round means a lot to me and we will just go out and be proud of where we come from and who we are representing."

Staggs has matured immensely and while Pat Carrigan will captain the side on Saturday night, he is a candidate to do so in the future.

"It would be a big honour to captain the club here, the Brisbane Broncos being the organisation that it is," he said.

"Maybe later down the track who knows. I would love to lead this club."

The agenda first-up is adding another chapter in his Dolphins feud. What has he got up his sleeve this time?

"I don't know," Staggs grinned.

"I will see what I can pull out of my pocket. We will just wait and see."

Hahahahahaha talk about trying to manipulate it to suit. Australia is a very very small fish in this world mate. I can name you over 1000 in the WORLD. You do realise theres more than just Australia. **** you're tiring sometimes....

How did you see that as a valuable contribution to the conversation why don't the Broncos own Lang Park?

Just for the record, only 5/32 NFL teams own their ground and Man City and West Ham don't own their ground.

Also, just further to my point, to redevelop the Shane Warne stand is going to cost billion dollars and just the land the MCG is on is valued at 472 million by the MCG Trust.

Again, much easier to just pay 12 lots of rent then find billion dollars. But I am sure Dave just hasn't thought of it, sitting there looking at his billion dollars doing nothing and thinking of course buy Lang Park.

Sporting clubs owning stadiums was the topic.

Just for the record....thanks for proving my point... theres 20 teams in the premier league 😂 more than i realised own it then! Cheers!

Im sure Dave has thought of it.... just has those financial idiots of the English premier league while they sit on their billions and billions and billions and billions of dollars above what the entire nrl makes.... Bafoons I tell you! Financial fools! Do they not know Australia is the financial powerhouse and should be used as a the example for all others!?

And "for the record" it'd 9/32 nfl teams, it's the owners of the team that own both in the other 4. Want to play a game and do europe? Or other leagues? Man, you are seriously tiring sometimes. Hanging around nrl players doesn't make you right about stuff you have no idea about....

Why is this even an argument? The Broncos are valued at ~$100m, there's no universe in where we could afford anything even remotely like Suncorp Stadium.

Even the smallest of these NFL/soccer/whatever clubs are multiples times the size of us.

If we owned one it would something like Redcliffe or the Sharks have, and who the **** wants an 8,000 seat stadium?

The last page and a half of this thread is the funniest shit I have read today. I admire your restraint for not calling somebody a ****head 1910.

You do realise how loans work right?

Example 1/1000+ that that is complete bs.

Dundee fc. Net worth ~5 million aus dollars. Own their 12,000 seat stadium, purchased in 2023. They are a club that has 1/25th of the broncos networth. Do the maths.... Want lots more examples?

I am not saying the broncos will or should build a 50,000 stadium. I merely pointed out that the model Australian sports teams have is complete and utter shit and that clubs should and could look in to starting to take power back by building their own like 1000s of sports clubs, universities and even bloody high schools around the world. There is literally nothing stopping the stadiums here charging whatever the **** they want, and they do! At the very least they should be part owners or have very, very, very, very long leases that guarantee some sort of safety.

The redevelopment of Lang Park was 280 million with one side already there so that cut cost 20 years ago and the redevelopment of the SFS cost was $828 million- how is anyone apart from government affording that?
If it were privately owned, the ticket prices would be more insane than they have already become.

Australian governments love building stadiums, if the Lions had bought the Gabba they'd be left with a dud investment while the government builds the Olympics up the road.

As it is now, they go see ya Gabba empty their pigeonhole and move into a new stadium.

Unless you're the Dolphins or Sharks and purchased the land it's just not doable anymore, where would the Broncos build a stadium now? Caboolture? Dave would get laughed at for even suggesting they borrow a billion dollars to leave Lang Park and build halfway to the Sunshine Coast.

Man U constructed Old Trafford 115 years ago for 90,000 pounds, if the Broncos had bought Milton in 1910 sure great idea.

The key difference is these smaller overseas clubs have either owned their land since the 1800s when they purchased it in the centre of town for thruppence or some shit, or they've had a billionaire come in and throw money at the club because he needs a hobby. Their 'stadiums' are a couple of grandstands on either side of the field.

We need something closer to what the smaller NFL or EPL teams have, and it's just not financially viable in the market we have.

And speaking of Dundee, owning their own ground isn't exactly making them money according to their latest financial statements.

Luton Town just got given £250 million pounds just for rocking up to the Premier League. That's 5 times more than the Broncos entire market value. And their stadium still only holds 12,000.

Boston United... again you are comparing a park football team owning a grandstand at the local field, to a club that requires a proper 50,000 seat stadium that would take literal billions to build (or buy back from the Government).

Look closer to home. Redcliffe are apparently richer than us, DO have their own stadium, and the NRL team barely uses it because it's not fit for that purpose.

The Broncos owning their own stadium would be amazing, it's just not an option unless the Government were willing to sell us Lang Park for a 90% discount.

Luton town in the premier league? Hahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahaha you should probably check that....... league one, they wouldn't have 1/10th the finances of the broncos ffs. Is this what I'm dealing with. It's pretty simple. The banks would loan what the clubs could pay back, you think the stadiums are getting built and bleeding money? They make profit through gate takings in the LONG TERM. 35,000 people 12 times a year and they can't eventually make a profit from it? Lol. If you can't make money from it, NO ONE WOULD BUILD THEM EVER. They make money! Just like tolled roads. It's such a short term look at it. Pay rent for 200 years/eternity or make a profit in 50 years (it won't take anywhere near that).

You still haven't given me ONE example of a club being negatively impacted by having their own stadium yet? And you LITERALLY LIED to try to make another point. League one is only JUST professional, it's not the premier league, deadset hahahahahahahaha Luton town in the premier league, you want more examples. THERE ARE 1000S IN EUROPE

Im gonna be laughing about that for a long time. Luton town in the premier league haha. It's the equivalent of the Logan city hawks being in the nrl lol

Sharks has been a construction site for 10 years, they've had to play games away from home it was so bad, and they've been going to make money since the 1980's and still this week the should the Sharks host finals debate comes up again.

28 km to the new billion-dollar SFS but you currently have to move witches hat to get a seat at the sharks and wear a hard hat for a decade.
