OFFICIAL Payne Haas to depart Broncos at the end of 2026

I respect Payne for sticking during the hard times, but geez he's hard to like.

Having said that, this media beat up is ridiculous, at least make it believable.

'The Sydney Morning Herald reported that several rival club officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said there was talk Haas had grown tired of Maguire’s intense training methods.'

Payne is one of the fittest guys in the comp, if anyone was going to pack it in due to the training methods, I highly doubt it would be him. Also, what message is that sending, oh he want to go play for Gramps Wayne because it's easy.
Yet none of these rival officials tried to sign him and were all shocked when it was announced?

The Madge training too hard narrative is soo lazy, just won the comp & they are stirring the same shit up again. Its preseason, I bet most players have been having a whinge, nobody enjoys it ffs.

I hope we do. 5 years is a bit long though.4 year max is preferable. 5 not ideal but what might be required.

A deal with get out clauses for rugby union I think would be good business.
I see it as a win either way. He is here long term or goes to a non competitor on bigger money and we are in the same situation we are now.The $$$ is key too.

I think he should go to Union at some point. Take the money and have less stress on his body for the second half of his career.

I think the path Haas has taken with his contract negotiation is the strategy to get the most money. I don't think it's flip flopping. It's just how to get all the buyers at the table competing. When R360 feel over her needed another party there to take is place.

Maybe this is all orchestrated. Or he will do what Munster did to Bennett... Or I am totally wrong and he is going to a Souths and his decision is made.
If it's even real a 5yr deal would likely include an upgrade on this year so a 4yr extension.

DD was already giving him a send off at last night's launch so it would seem unlikely broncos are trying to get him to backflip

I'd rather have him in our team as well, i'm just sick of this constant circus with him. For a bloke who apparently loves the club, he seems to want out a fair bit.
Circus? We only found out about this two days ago it's not like it's been a massive protracted thing playing out for months in the media. If we pull it out of the fire and he re-signs with us it's barely a blip.

I dont really get the mercenary talk about him either, he's only ever played for us and has earned every upgrade he's been given.

After having time to digest this without the raw emotion... I think the total shock and dissapointment that we all feel is testament to how monumental this is.

If the rumours are true that the club has played hardball on a few key contract clauses then that is a massive error. Hope DD and the heirachy can reverse it in this 8 day (and counting) window.

We are talking about the best prop ever. You do whatever to keep him
I'd much rather have Haas and a rookie centre than a mid prop and Shibasaki on 500k.

Haas is a unicorn.
There are only 4 generational players in today's current comp:
Haas
Walsh
Cleary
Grant
We have 2 of them.

As long as Payne and Reece are in the four walls they will be magnets for talent and eyeballs. Others will take less to play for us and that is the trade off to paying Walsh and Haas overs. It isn't worth throwing it away when who knows when we will have another chance - 10, 20, 30 years away?
I can guarantee Pezet would have a higher salary if Haas wasn't at the club.

I'd much rather the embarassment of Haas backfliping than seeing him in a Rabbitohs jersey.

My take on it all

You must not have been around for his yearly contract drama that him and his manager drum up.
His entire contract saga at Brisbane has been one big circus. Big enough that he got boo'd by fans for it.

For a guy that constantly said he loves the club, he sure had a funny way of showing it by threatening to walk if we didn't upgrade him time and time again.

Name a single other Bronco that has handled their contract the way Payne and his management have?

Exactly....

Mercenary would be harsh, but leaving the club without a payrise after we just won the comp does make you feel like he's not a true believer, which puts him at odds with pretty much everyone here.

I don't hate him for it though. I've been in workplaces for less time and felt stale, so if he does just want a change of scenery I would understand it.

Broncos last game 1991 pack- didn't make finals.

Gee
K.Walters
Dowling
Cann
Gillmeister
Matterson

Bench- Hohn

Broncos 1992 Grand Final

Lazarus
K.Walters
Allen
Gillmeister
Cann
Matterson

Bench-Gee and Hohn.

Identical but for Allen and Lazo and Allen was still at the club in 91. So really Lazo is the only change.
The current Souths roster is not really comparable to what the Broncos had in 1991.. The Broncos had all the pieces in place bar that big front row presence.. Lazarus was the finishing touch that put them over the edge..

Souths have a some pretty major holes in their roster and a marquee player who hasn’t been able to put a season of consistent, motivated football together in a number of years..

Haas will help but he’s not the finishing touch like Lazarus was to that Broncos side in 1992

Big metre eating props are a luxury now that have become secondary to big metre eater back fives. Haas is amazing and we'll miss him for sure, its a huge dent in what we've been building but his money means we don't have to lose anyone else now if we don't want to, can even gives Shibs a pay day if we want.

Pezet will love the platform laid by our back five and it isn't like Carrigan and Willison are plodders either. We're also the Broncos, we'll either attract another good prop or we have one or three being nurtured through the ranks.

Can we replace Haas? No, who can? Can we compensate for him though and still lay a platform for our spine? Absolutely we can!

They haven't been replaced. Your back five have taken on the load out of your end, so your front row doesn't have to truck it off his own line, but they haven't replaced him when you're over halfway. Cleary doesn't give the ball to To'o when he wants to get to a spot.

When Reynolds wants to get to the 50 or the far post to attack 30 out it's Payne that gets him there.

I wholeheartedly disagree and applaud DD and the crew for sticking to their guns. Payne sets a precedent if we fold to his every demand and it wont be long before literally every other marque player is doing the same. Reece wants more? Threaten to walk or insert insane clauses into his contract, Maam threatens to walk, same thing.

The team is bigger than any one player, Payne is collateral to adhering to that ideology.

I really hope we are not trying to counter offer Souths by being as dumb as Souths.

Maybe we should match all of Souths clauses to get him to stay... We could add a Bennett get-out clause 😝

If we give him clauses to get out, this shit will happen every 12 months. Like i said before, it brings uncertainty and disruption we simply dont need. We have made him a fair offer and as usual, it’s not good enough for him. Time to walk away.
Good points, but **** Bennett and souths. I hope Haas’ agent can’t fly down to Sydney to talk to them because it’s raining

Souths will have Trell on 1 million Murray on a million Haas on 1.2 then Fifi and Cheese on decent coin.
It doesn't leave much to get a 6 and 7 if there were any good ones available.

Oh god Cheese, I forgot he was there now. I know he was injured, but he's definitely suffered from the storm curse ever since leaving. Didn't seem all that damaging playing for the rorters.
